Donovan hoping for a USMNT - Mexico Gold Cup final
The United States men's national team all time scorer talked about his expectations for the Stars and Stripes squad in the up-coming Gold Cup.
The groups for the Gold Cup have been drawn, for what will be the first big test of Gregg Berhalter's era as the US national team coach. And Landon Donovan, the USMNT superstar, is convinced they will hold their own - although, of course, there are no guarantees, as he said to UDN Linea de Cuatro.
The United States Men's National Team will face Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana in Group D, and according to Donovan, the Stars and Stripes squad is not the best team in the region as they didn't qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with T&T preventing them from reaching the tournament, but he says he trusts in Berhalter.
"I think Gregg Berhalter is the best coach at the moment for the US national team, he did excellent work in Columbus, and he's a young coaching star in our country. We'll see this summer what he does; if he can succeed, it's going to help him a lot.
There's extra motivation for the game against Trinidad & Tobago, and the USMNT is in a difficult group with Panama as they always have a chance to eliminate some teams in the Gold Cup."
The United States vs. Mexico
The former USMNT star and four-time Gold Cup winner thinks Mexico has an easier group going against Canada, Martinique, and Cuba, and though he also believes that Mexico are going into the tournament stronger, he's hopeful that the United States can be crowned kings of CONCACAF once again.
Landon Donovan knows that it all comes down to the final game, and he's eager for that match to be contested between Mexico and the US national team, with a somewhat inexperienced American squad having managed to get through the pressure of the tournament.
"We'll see if the younger players like Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Christian Pulisic can or not. This tournament is tough, every four days you're playing and traveling. It's not easy, we'll see what they can do, and if at the end they can lift the trophy it's going to say a lot about their ability, mentality, and talent," he concluded.
