Ronaldo's mother, Dolores Aveiro, has revealed what he told her following Juventus' heartbreaking elimination from the Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of securing a fourth consecutive and sixth career Champions League title this season came crashing to an end on Tuesday after Ajax stunned Juventus in Turin to knock the Italian side out of the competition at the quarter-final stage.
The Portuguese star opened the scoring at the Juventus stadium in the 27th minute to give his side the advantage. But goals from Donny Van der Beek and Matthijs de Ligt cancelled out the hosts' lead to send Ajax through to their first semi-final since 1997.
Ronaldo’s frustrations were clearly visible from a late challenge that earned him a yellow card deep into injury time, which proved to be the last action of the ex-Real Madrid star in this year’s competition, after having scored a stunning hat-trick against Atlético Madrid in the last round to secure Juve’s place in the quarter finals.
Ronaldo "very sad", says mother
But after the heroics that night against Diego Simeone’s side and scoring both Juve’s goals against Ajax, Ronaldo’s mother has said that her son feels he cannot be depended upon to perform miracles.
“He was very sad. He would have liked to have gone to the final. It will be for the next the one,” Aveiro told Gazzetta dello Sport. “What did he say to me? ‘Mom I don’t make miracles’.”
The player’s sister, Katia Aveiro also spoke about the brother and Juve’s elimination from the Champions League. “You did your part my love,” she stated on her Instagram account, accompanied by a picture of the Juve striker during Wednesday's game.
Aveiro also congratulated Ajax, who pulled off their first-ever away victory over Juventus after 12 attempts. Having already taken the scalps of giants Real Madrid and Juventus, Ten Hag's young side will not be taken lightly by their semi-final opponents.
