JorgeValdano discussed Real Madrid's defeat at Rayo Vallecano on Onda Cero's El Transistor programme and came to the conclusion that some of the players Zinedine Zidane fielded in Vallecas were not fully match-fit. "There were a lot of players in the Real Madrid starting XI who are not up to the rhythm the competition demands. The team has no backbone," he explained.
Real Madrid don't gel as a team
The Argentinean added that another factor which influenced the result was the attitude of the players who, he said, didn't play as a team and struggle whenever Karim Benzema is absent: "Real Madrid looked like a team of individuals, they play for themselves, not each other and once they reach the final third of the pitch, if Benzema's not there, the move falls part".
Valdano also gave his opinion of whether signing Paul Pogba would help to improve the team. He believes that the Manchester United midfielder would provide only part of the solution to Real Madrid's midfield: "I don't think Pogba would add much to Madrid's game but he'd bring goals. On his own, Pogba is scoring more goals that the entire Real Madrid midfield".
