Will anyone break Wondolowski's MLS all-time scoring record?
USA TODAY

The moment everyone was expecting finally came on Saturday as Chris Wondolowski broke the MLS all-time scoring record with a four-goal haul against Chicago Fire to take his tally to 148, beating the record previously held by former LA Galaxy superstar, Landon Donovan.

All records are there to be broken and one day someone will take the 36-year-old Wondo's crown as the all-time MLS top scorer. We take a look at some of the candidates to do so.

Josef Martínez

Martínez is just 26 years old and has already set the MLS single-season scoring at Atlanta United; In total, the Venezuela international has scored 55 goals in 66 games played, a number that took Chris Wondolowski 129 games to reach, and holds the record for hat-tricks in the division.

If Martínez stays with Atlanta he is best-placed to break Wondo's record as at his current rate he'll need only around four more seasons to hit the 148 goals mark.

Kei Kamara

Kamara is 34 years old and has hit 119 goals in 326 games; Wondolowski needed 255 games to reach that same number. Kamara has already scored seven goals in 12 games this season despite Colorado's poor start to the campaign.

Kamara could break Wondo's record if the San José striker hits a barren patch with a rate of 15 goals in two seasons -  or if Wondolowski moves to another league at the end of the season or decides to hang up his boots.

Gyasi Zardes

Zardes is 27 years old, and has a record of 57 goals in 177 games played, a higher number than the 134 Wondo needed to reach the same number.

But since he left LA Galaxy to join Columbus Crew the forward had an outstanding 2018 season which earned him a Designated Player deal this year; still, he would need around five seasons at a scoring rate of 15 goals a year to take Wondo's record. He would be only 32 by then, so it's not impossible.

Jozy Altidore

The Toronto FC striker has hit 65 goals in 132 MLS games, a number that took the Quakes striker 142 games. However, constant injuries have prevented Altidore from recording a higher return.

The US forward will need more consistency if he wants to surpass Wondolowski and he will require around three 20-goal and two 15-goal season to do so.

Bradley Wright-Phillips

The 34-year-old Englishman has scored 107 goals in 177 games, a faster return than Wondo who required 225 matches to reach that mark. This season though he has only made six appearances for the Red Bulls and has scored just one goal.

Wright-Phillips needs 41 strikes to reach Wondolowski's 148-goal mark, assuming the Quakes striker doesn't keep adding to his haul, and in plain numbers the Charlton Athletic legend will need two 20+-goal seasons to match Wondo's current record.
