Global derby day fever strikes on Sunday: Rome, Buenos Aires, Glasgow...
Cancel all plans for Sunday as once again the fixture-list gods have been kind with four of the world's biggest derbies taking place in North London, Rome, Glasgow and Buenos Aires.
Every so often, the gods of the footballing fixture list smile down on the humble fan bestowing he or she with an unmissable feast of major global derby fixtures. Sunday September 1st is that day with all eyes on games in Glasgow, Rome and North London and Buenos Aires to look forward to.
The Old Firm: Rangers-Celtic
With 104 league titles between both clubs, the Glasgow derby is not only the biggest derby in Scottish football, and arguably the biggest game in the British Isles but has also firmly established itself as one of the biggest derbies on the global stage regularly featuring in global Top 10 rankings.
With a backdrop of religious division, the match is always a fast and furious clash with Rangers anxious to stem Celtic's dominance in recent times with the 'hoops' winning the last eight domestic titles and hoping to emulate their nine-in-a-row league wins which they secured from 1966-1974. Rangers too can claim a successive spell of nine consecutive wins when they lifted the league trophy in every season from 1989-1997.
Both sides have started their respective domestic campaigns in emphatic form with both clubs boasting a 100% record in the three games played to date with Celtic leading the table on the virtue of goal difference.
Kick-off at Ibrox is at 13:00 CEST and here is a guide to outlets where you can follow the action unfold in Glasgow.
North London: Arsenal-Tottenham Hotspur
Champions League finalists Spurs make the short journey to London N5 in a derby match that in recent years has seen honours shared between both North London giants.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be anxious to secure his first Premier League scalp over the 'Lillywhites' with both clubs enjoying positive starts to their respective domestic campaigns with Arsenal lying in third and Spurs currently in seventh place in the table.
German international Mesut Özil is available but not expected to start for Emery with Arsenal's front three of Nicolas Pépé, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hoping to create trouble for the Spurs' rear-guard.
Derby della Capitale: Lazio-Roma
With just one round of games played in the 2019-20 Serie A campaign, the clash at the Stadio Olympico comes early and both clubs will be anxious to set an early season marker and command bragging rights at this early outset.
Former AS Roma player and boss Eusebio Di Francesco recalled the emotion of participating in the derby stating in 2017: "The first time I played in a derby, we all came out under the Curva before the game. I never went weak in the knees before a game, but that time I did. It's a unique emotion, it has never been a match like all the others."
Historically the 'Giallorossi' have the upper hand on the 'Laziali' with Roma winning 54 of the 158 Serie A meetings to Lazio's 34 with 58 games ending in a draw.
El Superclasico: River Plate-Boca Juniors
Sunday's Superliga Argentina meeting between River and Boca will be the first meeting since the 2018 Copa Libertadores final which was ultimately staged in Madrid after violent incidents dogged the return leg of the game in Buenos Aires.
Marcelo Gallardo's River were victorious on that fresh December Madrid night and Boca will be anxious to avenge that painful defeat in the only domestic league meeting between both Argentine giants this season.
The game is also a precursor to the Copa Libertadores 2019 semi-final where 'Millonarios' and' 'Xeneizes' will go head to head once again with a berth in the Santiago final at stake.
For many, this game is the biggest domestic match in the world and the fall-out from the 2018 final showed us that it's a game that rather than winning, no side wants to lose given the immense pressure that surrounds the fixture.
