World Cup 2022: 'Desert rose' at centre of cultural experiences

Work continues to ready Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, with its eye-catching National Museum chief among the cultural activities being prepared.

World Cup 2022: 'Desert rose' at centre of cultural experiences

The organisers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup are not only focused on preparing the facilities and infrastructure directly necessary for the tournament, but are also out to ensure there are plenty of additional activities available to the hundreds of thousands of fans expected in Qatar for the event.

Given that this is the first time the prestigious football tournament is to be held in an Arab country, the Qatari authorities are particularly keen to offer a range of attractions that allow visitors from across the globe to get a real taste of the history and culture of the Arab world.

National Museum of Qatar: among Time's 100 Greatest Places

The centrepiece of this drive is the new National Museum of Qatar, one of the country's chief tourist draws. Indeed, the museum - which boasts a unique, eye-catching design inspired by the local desert rose - was this year named by Time Magazine as one of the World's 100 Greatest Places.

Spread over 1.5km, the NMoQ experience is split into three parts, or 'chapters': Beginnings, Life in Qatar and The Modern History of Qatar. Designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, the museum also houses the recently restored Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani.
