Atlético Madrid 2-2 Juventus: Champions League Group D

Atlético Madrid 2-2 Juventus: Champions League Group D

Atlético Madrid 2-2 Juventus: as it happened

Peep peep peeeeep!

That's full time at the Wanda, where Héctor Herrera's late header for Atlético Madrid means the spoils are shared.

Having gone down to Real Sociedad in LaLiga at the weekend, Los Rojiblancos looked to be heading for a second straight defeat when a Juan Cuadrado stunner and a Blaise Matuidi header left Juve two to the good.

However, after Stefan Savic nodded in from close range with 20 minutes to go, Herrera's last-gasp effort completed the comeback and salvaged a point for Diego Simeone's men

Up next for Atlético in Group D is a trip to face Lokomotic Moscow on 1 October - a clash that the Russians will go into sitting top of the table after winning 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen tonight.

Thanks for reading!

94

Blimey, Juve go even closer to nicking it - and again Cristiano is involved. He jinks into shooting space inside the area and skims a low shot towards Oblak's left-hand post... but it flies just wide! What a let-off for Atlético.

93

I say. That is a crucial touch from Giménez. Cuadradoswings over a delicious ball towards Cristiano at the back stick. He is preparing to pull the trigger, but the Uruguayan gets the faintest of nicks on the ball to divert it away from the striker.

92

Five minutes of time added on, by the way.

Herrera heads the hosts level! The substitute nods into the corner past Szczesny's dive, and Atlético look to have rescued a point!

90

Another corner for Atlético, and...

88

Joao Félix sets off down the right wing, but Bentancur is there to bustle him off the ball and get it out for a corner. Simeone does his usual whip-the-crowd-into-a-frenzy routine, but it is to no avail. The corner comes to diddly-squat.

87

Aaron Ramsey comes on for Juventus, Pjanic making way for the Welshman. That's Ramsey's competitive debut for the Bianconeri.

85

Atlético have five minutes to salvage something, or it's a second straight defeat for Los Rojiblancos.

84

Atlético are screaming for a handball by Bonucci in the box! Correa gets to the byline and cuts it back into the six-yard box, where Costa and Félix are both queuing up to finish, but succeed only in getting in each other's way. Amid something of a goalmouth stramash, the ball ricochets up and hits Bonucci... but neither referee nor VAR give a pen. Costa is booked for his protests.

82

Close! Vitolo isn't far away from firing Atlético level, running at the Juventus backline before pinging one at goal - but Szczesny turns it over!

80

Juventus win a free-kick wide on the right, which promptly becomes a corner. Atlético initially clear, before the visitors work it to the newly-introduced Dybala to twist and turn his way towards the byline... but his cut-back is blocked!

Dybala coming on for Juve, Higuaín trudges off.

78

Oblak! The Atleti keeper nicks the ball off Ronaldo's boot with a diving fist after Cuadrado again found a vicious cross into the area.

76

Juve looking to slow the tempo right down now.

75

Herrera in on for his Atlético debut as Thomas hobbles off with what looked like a foot problem.

74

It was Trippier, in fact, who cleared off the line there for Juve's second bite of the cherry. The England defender's legend grows at the Metropolitano.

73

Oblak! An amazing double save keeps Atlético in the game. Higuaín probably should have scored from the first.

72

Atlético with their tails up now. Koke tries his lick from distance but Szczesny has not trouble stopping that.

70

Cuadrado goes in the book for a shove on Lodi, who loses a lot of cool points for doing the old face-grabbing routine even though the push was in the chest.

69

Koke lifts a free kick into the area and Giménez wins the header, planting it back across the box for Savic to head home from point blank range.

69

Gooooooooooool! Savic! Atlético pull one back!

68

Rodrigo Bentancur coming on for Juve, Sami Khedira the man to make way.

66

Atlético two goals down now, much the same as Juve were in the last meeting between the two sides in this stadium. The home side only have 25 minutes or so to pull it back though, not 90.

65

The Frenchman meets an Alex Sandro cross and plants a perfect header past Oblak! The Atleti keeper got a hand to it but it was too powerful even for him to stop.

65

Goooooooooooool! Matuidi!

64

But fair play to him, he's back up with little fuss.

63

The referee is down! He gets a ball full in the face and that does look painful.

62

Ronaldo! The Portuguese steals a yard on Trippier and gets his head to a deep cross but can't keep it down. He has yet to score in the Metropolitano.

60

Correa comes on for Atlético. Lemar off.

59

What a move from Atletico! Beautiful one-touch stuff around the area and a killer pass to cap it off that Giménez sends inches wide! That's got the crowd going.

58

Danilo is back on, no harm done.

57

Ronaldo clips Diego Costa in midfield and the Atlético striker tumbles into Danilo, causing his international teammate more harm than himself. The magic sponge is out...

55

The stands erupt as Ronaldo looks for a free on the left after minimal contact. The brush that he recieved was still more potent than anything Atlético have mustered thus far in the opening 10 minutes of the half.

53

Juve threaten again as Cuadrado bursts forward and finds Danilo. The Brazilian opts to shoot with Ronaldo free on the left. The Portuguese's expression is not one of indifference towards his teammate.

52

Thomas! He has a habit of bagging spectacular goals from impossible distances but this one flies over Szczesny's bar.

52

Nothing is the answer, a short one coming to nothing.

51

Now the home side have a corner... what can they cook up?

50

An insipid delivery from the left from Lemar and another potential chance for Atlético goes begging. Without Morata, there isn't much point in trying the aerial approach against this defence.

48

Atlético have a chance to reply straight away, Costa preventing the ball from going out but misplacing his ball back into the area.

47

Incredible strike from the winger, who absolutely batters it into the top corner with his left. Atlético should have mopped up the danger before then, Higuaín and Ronaldo were up against six defenders but nobody noted Cuadrado arriving on the far side

47

Goooooooooooool! Cuadrado!

Saúl does well on the right to drift into the Juve box but Bonucci clears.

46

No changes from either side at the break.

46

We're back underway!

Juve have plenty of options on the bench. Atlético's looks a bit light in comparison. We'll see if there are any changes at half time.

Atlético's best chance perhaps - certainly the one that caused the Pole the most discomfort - was that spectacular Félix break from his own half.

Everything Juve have slung into the box has been dealt with fairly comfortably by Atlético, Oblak has only been called into action twice while Szczesny has had to make four saves.

Juve enjoyed slightly more possession in the opening 45 than the home side but mustered just two shots on target to Atleti's four. Still goalless at the break.

45

And that's the half! Zero stoppage time added. It's been pretty clean generally.

44

Matuidi! What a slicer... the Frenchman takes a swing and it was always destined to be a golazo or a horrible miss. One of the two. It was the latter.

43

Still even stevens in the Metropolitano with neither side really going for the jugular.

41

Thomas puts in some great defensive work and gets Atlético on the front foot. Koke goes down in the area but the ref is having none of that. It was a pretty hopeful tumble from the Atletico captain.

39

Ronaldo! Cuadrado sends in a glorious ball and the Portuguese rises at the far post to meet it but finds the considerable frame of Oblak standing right there. Well read by the Atleti keeper.

38

Savic concedes a needless corner with nobody coming in to meet Ronaldo's cross but there was a communication breakdown in the Atleti back line there.

37

Juve back in numbers now as Atlético probe for an opening with zero success.

36

Atlético break and it's a good move, Lodi overlapping with Lemar but the Brazilian's cross is well read by Bonucci, who sees no threat behind him and lets it run out for a goal kick.

35

Six attempts from Atlético, just the three from Juve so far.

34

Pjanic! And there was panic there for a moment. The midfielder lets fly and Giménez gets a head on it but sends it flying wide of Oblak's post. That could have gone anywhere but it almost went in!

33

Sustained pressure from Juve now but Atlético have closed ranks as they tend to do and there's no way through the red and white wall for the visitors.

31

Juve come now and Ronaldo sends in a decent cross but there's nobody there to meet it and Giménez pumps it clear. Higauín has barely had a toucch in the opening 30 minutes.

30

Atlético try a sneaky training ground routine with Saúl and Lemar but makes a right pig's ear of it. A bit of waste from that position.

29

Atlético peppering the Juve area from both sides and now they have a real chance as Cuadrado needlessly jumps into Lodi on the edge of the box on the left.

It really is a wonderful stadium...

27

Saúl sneaks into the area and feeds Félix but his snap shot is scuffed straight to Szczesny.

26

Plenty of play going through Trippier and he certainly has a decent cross in his locker but with Félix and Costa up front the home side will need to play a little more through the middle. Bonucci and De Ligt are no mugs in the air.

25

Matuidi gets the better of Thomas in the area and pulls the ball back for Higuaín but it clips the striker's heel and Oblak scoops up the lose ball.

24

Trippier delivers, Savic goes up and it clips a Juve player on its way out for another corner.

24

Corner to Atlético as Danilo hoiks Trippier's cross out of play.

23

Ronaldo has hit first pop from distance and it bounces just in front of Oblak. They're not easy to deal with but the Slovenian read it well and makes a comfortable save.

22

Pjanic narrowly avoids the book as he takes Costa out from behind.

20

The second biggest cheer of the evening goes up as Lodi slides into Ronaldo with the Portuguese attempting some step-over trickery. The tackle is firm, the ball collected and played out in one move.

19

Matuidi makes a run down the left to meet Ronaldo's deft flick and whips in a dangerous cross but Oblak gathers.

18

Corner for Atlético... it's a good delivery from Koke and met firmly by Giménez but Szczesny was perfectly placed to deal with it.

15

Lodi bursts down the left and gets on the end of a cross-field ball. He strikes it first time and it's well hit but Szczesny makes the save.

14

Matuidi in the book for shoving his hand into Koke's face as they went for a 50-50. A little harsh - the Frenchman wasn't looking in Koke's direction and couldn't know he was there - but that's not good for Juve with less than 15 on the clock.

13

Howls of glee from the stands as Ronaldo attempts a cross that skids along the turf and straight into the paws of Oblak.

12

Atlético starting to wrest control of the pig skin from the Italian side now, building up nicely to tee Félix again but his header is bread and butter for Szczesny.

10

Joao Félix! The Portuguese takes it the length of the pitch with four Juve defenders for company and still manages to get a shot off that Szczesny pushes around the post for a corner. What a move from the youngster.

9

The Juve press is quite something... Atlético on the back foot as the blue shirts buzz around.

8

Juve look for Ronaldo in the box again and once more, Savic puts in a fine header to deny the Portuguese a chance.

6

Juve loft it into the area for Ronaldo but Savic has him well covered and Oblak gathers. Lemar is brought down in midfield and Atlético have a free kick. Lodi slings it in and it was begging for a touch there but Szczesny plucked it from the air.

5

Atlético play it short and it comes to nothing. Diego Costa lays down a marker on Bonucci, clattering the veteran to the turf. That will be quite the battle this evening.

4

Corner to Atlético as Thomas whips in a cross that Danilo is forced to chest out with his keeper not commanding the situation there.

3

Free kick to Atlético as Pjanic goes through the back of Félix.

3

Three former Madridistas in the Juve line-up of course... Ronaldo, Higuaín and Sami Khedira.

2

It's poor from Pjanic though, failing to clear the first defender.

1

Huge "welcome" for Cristiano as he gets his first touch. And it leads to a corner...

1

A lilttle tap of the cheek for Félix from Ronaldo... we're off!

The teams are out, the stadium is in full throat and we're about to get underway!

Atlético's training shirt is unlikely to win many awards either mind... just 10 minutes until kick-off in the Metropolitano!

Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has said there is no air of revenge aurrounding this evening's encounter but that Diego Simeone's side will "go out to win, put on a show and make it clear that we want to win the Champions League."

Juve are out for the warm-up, sporting that quite remarkable training strip that someone, somewhere, actually signed off on.

Juventus' bench: further proof that Sarri has a pretty handy squad at his disposal.

Ronaldo

And then is was this, when the sides met last year in the knock-out stages.

Simeone

First it was this...

Atletico have won their last 3 home matches against Juventus. Can the Old Lady break that run this evening?

A whirlwind tour of the Metropolitano...

Both sides go into tonight's game having suffered league set-backs at the weekend. Atlético lost 2-0 away at Real Sociedad while Juve were held to a goalless draw at Fiorentina

And here's Sarri's starting XI. Juan Cuadrado given the nod up top to support Higuaín and Ronaldo while Danilo has recovered from a muscle problem to start at right back.

Here's Atlético's starting line-up. Costa and Félix will lead the line with plenty of attacking options from the flanks with Lodi and Trippier in support of Koke and Thomas Lemar

Such is Juve's wealth of riches that Emre Can - much to his chagrin - and Mario Mandzukic didn't even make Sarri's European squad

Juventus have a lengthy injury list but it is a testament to the club's recruitment pollicy that Maurizio Sarri can still name a squad like this. All eyes will be on Matthijs de Ligt - particularly those of Diego Costa - with the former Ajax defender not enjoying the best of starts to life in Turin.

Atlético are without former Juve striker Álvaro Morata for this one but will be mightily relieved to see Jan Oblak between the sticks considering Cristiano Ronaldo's quite ridiculous scoring record against his old cross-city rivals: 25 times in 32 games.

Even the presence of the prolific Portuguese could not see them through to the final last season though with Ajax knocking Massimiliano Allegri's side in spectacular fashion in the last eight. This might be just a group game but markers will be on the table for both sides with Atlético underperforming over the past two seasons.

Atlético and Juventus have both tasted the pain of defeat in the final recently, the Italians in 2015 and 2017 and the Liga side in 2014 and 2016. Re-conquering Europe for the first time since 1996 is Juve's priority goal and that was precisely why they splashed out over 100 million euros on Ronaldo a year ago

Atlético Madrid host Juventus at the Metropolitano on Wednesday still smarting from Cristiano Ronaldo's one-man show that eliminated Diego Simeone's side last season after Atlético went to Turin with a 2-0 advantage from the opening leg of the last 16 tie.
