Jesse Marsch became the first American manager to take to the sidelines for a Champions League group-stage game, also being the first US manager to get a UCL group-phase win, for a space in the history books.

The former New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact coach led Red Bull Salzburg to a 6-2 victory over Genk to rewrite history as this is Salzburg's first appearance in the Champions League proper, having gone out in the qualifying rounds in the last seven seasons.

Marsch is off to a good start in the highest-level European competition, with Erling Braut Haaland shining with a hat-trick to make a statement as Salzburg emerged as real contenders in Group E.

Now Marsch and Salzburg will need to remain in shape to face the current European champions, Liverpool, and Napoli, both outstanding teams with whom the US coach shares a group.

Salzburg's next rival will be Liverpool, who failed to beat Napoli in their first UCL meeting, now the Reds will host the Austrian side in Anfield.
