Sergio Reguilon has had a rollercoaster year. After debuting in the Champions League with Real Madrid last season and a summer loan to Sevilla, he is on the brink of becoming a Spanish international. He spoke with AS about his rise and plans for the future.

"It has been the most exciting year of my life," he says. "Everything has happened so fast but I have adapted well. I'm really enjoying it and now with the Spanish team, every minute is a gift."

Roberto Moreno, the national team manager, says Reguilon is like Carvajal being impossible to stop once he goes forward. "It's an honour that he sees me as someone like Carvajal because he is one of the best in his position," Reguilon says.

As one of the most interesting signings of the summer, Reguilon says he left Real Madrid on loan for Sevilla knowing he gave everything for the club. "I have a very clear consience because I left everything out there for Real Madrid," he says. "Others made that decision and I can't do anything but do my job to the very best. It's what I did in Madrid and I try to do it now at Sevilla."

"I left Madrid on good terms, I wasn't mad at anyone," he continues. "Everything was a mutual agreement. I am an academy player and I owe everything to Madrid. It's impossible for me to leave in a bad way."

With Achraf and Reguilon tearing up and down the flanks at Dortmund and Sevilla respectively, the left-back says there are plenty of Real Madrid loan players enjoying themselves this season. "Odegaard and Ceballos are doing really well too," he says. "I want to do my best at Sevilla and that's my only concern. The best way to make it difficult for Zidane is to play well for Sevilla. My plan is to run, perform and give everything in every game and next year, whatever happens will happen."

On Valverde, Kroos and Marcelo and Roberto Carlos

Reguilon is watching his former teammates and is particularly impressed with fede Valverde although not surprised. "Valverde is a phenomenon," he says. "He told us a while ago that he was going to be the new Kroos. Fede has always carried himself with humility, going little by little, but with conviction."

Asked if he could be the new Marcelo, Reguilon doesn't want to commit given the Brazilians' achievements. "I don't know, he is one of the best ever. We have distinct styles but he is a baller."

"Since I was little, Roberto Carlos was my idol," he says. "I loved everything about him but above all, his pace and the way he hit the ball. Last season, he was around us and I had the chance to say to him in person everything I admire about him."
