Turkey are back at a major tournament, with a solid team whose defence will be tough for any forward line to get through.
Legendary figure Senol Gunes, who took Turkey to the World Cup semi-finals in 2002, is back, this time in the dug-out, where he's having a major impact. After failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia, Turkey are back for a major tournament and do so with a team that's notably solid at the back, thanks to the proliferation of quality defenders that have appeared in recent years: Soyuncu, Demirel, Ayhan...
In qualifying Turkey were passionate, but also more competitive than in recent years. Their superb game against France at home, and the draw away in Paris, showed they were capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone, even the World Champions. In fact, right now they have to be considered one of the best performing teams who will be at the tournament.
What's particularly important is the return to the cause of lakes such as Burak Yilmaz. The veteran hit-man is once again feeling vital under Senol Gunes, a coach who likes to make use of historic heavyweights. Cenk Tosun has also recovered his status, though playing on the right. This is a fine Turkey side, and far solider than recent incarnations.
He struggles to get a starting berth for Juventus, but the simple fact that one of the biggest clubs in Europe has signed him shows how good the 21-year-old is, and how much promise he's showing. His performances at Sassuolo were stunning. He'll start alongside Soyuncu at the back.
The tricky situation faced by Turkey after missing out on the World Cup and the absolute requirement to qualify for the European Championships saw the Turkish FA persuade Senol Gunes to return. The World Cup 2002 hit the ground running and did what was required.
