The Spanish Football Federation has issued a statment in which they have announced the temporary suspension, with immediate effect, of all football matches, Men's and Women's games, futsal and non-professional games for the next 14 days; this includes all matches programmed for the Second Division B and Third Division. The RFEF have are also studying finding a new date for next month's Copa del Rey final between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.

The Spanish Footballers Association (AFE) filed a request on Tuesday to see all matches suspended rather than played behind closed doors following the Spanish authorities' decision to bar fans from attending sporting events.

LaLiga fixtures to go ahead - behind closed doors

The decison however, does not affect football matches in the top two divisions - LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank - fixtures for the next two matchdays (Weeks 28 and 29) will go ahead as planned but all games will be played behind closed doors. LaLiga took the decision yesterday after consultation with local autonomous region health departments with the shutout set to start with Friday's Week 28 meeting between Real Madrid and Eibar at the Bernabéu.

According to reports on Cadena SER, the decision to suspend all football matches in Spain could be extended to LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank. The RFEF will discuss the matter later today with officials from LaLiga and the AFE.

The RFEF explain that they have taken measure to postpone football matches in the wake of developments concerning the coronavirus epidemic with 2100 cases reported in Spain and 48 deaths.
