Concern over LaLiga finishing in July with 115 players out of contract
A prolonged suspension of domestic action could feasibly see the Spanish league finish in July despite many player's contracts terminating on June 30th.
In 91 years of its existence, LaLiga has never had to postpone two match-days and not realistically know when they, or the rest of the campaign will be played.
The Covid-19 pandemic has created a great deal of uncertainty in many aspects of life and with no-one quite knowing when football will resume again in Spain, certain suggestions advocate that the delay in scheduling fixtures could see LaLiga end in July. The suspension of Euro 2020 is fundamental in facilitating this for the Spanish and indeed other major European competitions.
Out of contract
This scenario raises the question relating to players who are out of contract come June 30, with the situation potentially impacting on 115 players whose deals expire with their current clubs on the last day of June.
The situation could affect 19 of the 20 top flight clubs with only FC Barcelona not implicated in the potential problem. Head of the Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales stated that the situation of extending the season would throw up plenty of questions with few answers at present. "A season traditionally finished on June 30 but in this instance we may have take exceptional measures" stated Rubiales last week.
Relegation threatened Leganés would be hardest hit with 14 of the current squad members out of contract with the club come the end of June. Granada (12) along with Mallorca (10) and Espanyol (10) would also be badly affected with the contract situation.
With no-one quite sure of when professional is to resume in Spain, the Spanish FA and LaLiga must sit down and agree on a series of unique measures that covers all possible scenarios relating to the title, relegation, European positions and see what is to happen with the 115 contracts that would see players severing ties with their current clubs.
