"There will be a lot of death"

United States president Donald Trump has told his daily press briefing that "there will be a lot of death" in the country as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

We probably have never seen anything like these kind of numbers," Trump added.

Coronavirus cases in the US moved past the 300,000 mark on Saturday, with the nation's death toll now at nearly 8,500.

India to show coronavirus "the power of light"

The people of India are set to turn off the lights in their homes for five minutes on Sunday at 21:00 IST, and display lamps, candles and mobile-phone torchlights in a show of the country's collective determination to beat the coronavirus pandemic.

"This Sunday, on 5 April, we must all together challenge the darkness spread by the corona crisis, introducing it to the power of light," Indian prime minister Modi said in an address to the nation on Friday.

India is currently in the midst of a 21-day lockdown as it bids to curb the spread of Covid-19, which has so far registered just over 3,000 cases in the country, leading to 86 deaths.

Tokyo

100 new cases reported in Tokyo on Saturday

Japan's capital city Tokyo reported 118 new Covid-19 infections on Saturday - the first time that the city has exceeded three figures since the pandemic began. The total number of cases in Tokyo stands at 891 with the national figure at 3,139. In Japan, 83 people have died due to the coronavirus crisis since the start of February - five passed away this weekend. Japan is one of the few countries which still isn't under lockdown but schools are closed and a lot of businesses including major department stores have closed own voluntarily and are expected to remain closed until 12 April at least.

Coronavirus "like a fire spreading" as New York registers 630 deaths in 24-hour period

Coronavirus-related illnesses killed 630 people in the last day in New York state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, in the bleakest 24 hours yet for the US state hit hardest by the pandemic.

The novel coronavirus has now killed 3,565 people in the state and the situation is particularly worrying on Long Island, east of New York City, where the number of cases "is like a fire spreading," Cuomo told a news conference.

Health experts calculate that New York, home both to bustling Manhattan and hilly farm country stretching to the Canadian border, might be around a week away from the worst point in the health crisis, which has killed about 60,000 people worldwide.

Turkey coronavirus deaths move past 500

The Turkish government has confirmed that its coronavirus death toll has passed the 500 mark, after 74 people died from Covid-19 in the country over the past 24 hours.

The Turkish health minister, Fahretin Koca, revealed on Saturday that the number of people who have been killed by coronavirus in the eastern European nation has climbed to a total of 501. In all, there have been 23,934 cases in Turkey.

6.5% of the elderly in Madrid's care homes have died curing the coronavirus crisis

A total of 2,318 elderly patients in care homes and nursing homes in Madrid have died during the past eight days due to the Covid-19 crisis. The Spanish capital has 465 public and private care homes, which look after around 52,000 pensioners. Since 9 March, family members have not been able to visit relatives in nursing homes in Spain for risk of infection. One of the worst zones to be affected is Leganés where 300 elderly residents died in the space of two weeks.

US hits 300,000 cases, Spain overtakes Italy

The number of coronavirus cases in the United States passed the 300,000 mark on Saturday evening, according to figures compiled by the Johns Hopkins University. Over 8,000 people in the country have been killed by Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Spain has overtaken Italy as the country with the second-most coronavirus positives, behind the US. There have now been 124,736 confirmed coronavirus cases in Spain, says the Johns Hopkins University.

They show that Italy, where more have died from Covid-19 than in any other country, has today moved past 15,000 deaths.

France death toll exceeds 7,500

The coronavirus epidemic figures in France rose sharply on Saturday with a total of 7,650 fatalities, after hospitals and care homes or the elderly reporting over a thousand deaths since Friday's figures were announced. One of the hardest-hit regions is the Île-de-France district of Paris however health officials were heartened by the news that the new of patients being admitted to Intensive Care have been decreasing. As it stands, there are 89,953 positive cases in France with 15,438 patients having recovered from the virus.

Two-week lockdown imposed in Dubai

Dubai has announced a two-week lockdown starting on Saturday to disinfect the emirate and contain the spread of the coronavirus, state news agency WAM said, citing the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management.

Dubai warned that mobility would be restricted and legal action taken against violators, WAM said, adding that supermarkets and pharmacies as well as food and drug delivery services would continue to operate as normal.

The oil-rich federation has reported an uptick in coronavirus cases, with several hundred people diagnosed since 1 April and a total number of cases of 1,505.

Spain to extend lockdown until April 26

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is set to announce the extension of the lockdown period in Spain until April 26, a further 15 days, following meetings with experts. Spain has been on lockdown since March 14 and this will be the second extension to be announced since the orignal deadline was set for March 29. India must prepare for an "onslaught", say doctors

CNN reports that top Indian doctors have warned that the country must prepare to face an “onslaught” of coronavirus cases after Dhavari, one of the world’s biggest slums located in Mumbai, confirmed its first COVID-19 death.
