Every night at 20:00 hours, in Madrid and all over Spain, citizens take to their balconies to applaud the doctors, nurses, carers and health workers who risk their lives every day in order to save the lives of others. But it seems not everyone is grateful for the job they do...

An anesthesiologist in Tenerife posted a tweet with some of the rude messages taped or pinned to the doors of some of his colleagues by their neighbours... It needs to be seen to be believed...

"I owe my life to the NHS" says British PM Boris Johnson

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed his gratitude to the country's health service by telling friends that if it wasn't for them, he might not be alive. Johnson said he owes his life to doctors, nurses and care staff at London's St. Thomas’ Hospital where he spent two days in intensive care being treated after testing positive for coronavirus. "The NHS saved my life. I can't thank them enough," he told friends, in comments relayed to the UK media, adding that the care and expertise he has received has been "exemplary".. 

Boris Johnson thanks NHS

The British PM is recovering from his Covid-19 related illness and has been moved from out of the Intensive Care Unit at St. Thomas' Hospital in London and in a brief statement this evening, thanked doctors and nurses for 'exemplary' care.

US death toll

With a cumulative total of 20,304 Covid-19related fatalities, the United States of America surpasses Italy in the overall death toll.

Trump Approves Major Disaster Declaration for the State of Wyoming

The United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal emergency aid has been granted to Wyoming after US President Donald Trump approved a disaster declaration for the state at 15:30 local time on Saturday. Lee dePalo has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. It is the first time in history that every state in the USA has been placed under a federal disaster declaration at the same time.

Coronavirus claims 11-year-old child, one of the youngest victims in England

UK health officials announced the "distressing news" that an 11-year-old child was among the 917 victims from Covid-19-related illnesses over the past 24 hours in the country. The total number of deaths of patients who were admitted to hospitals in the UK stands at 9,875 the Department for Health and Social Care confirmed.

The Government announced that 19 NHS workers have lost their lives during the pandemic and hospitals have reported a further four fatalities.

New York death tolls rises by 783

New York, the epi-centre of the coronavirus epidemic in the US, has reported 783 deaths over the past 24-hour period, bringing its total to 8,627.

In his press conference on Saturday morning, New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, said that while he recognised people were anxious to leave their homes, “the worst thing that can happen is we make a misstep and we let our emotions get ahead of our logic” and cause a second wave of coronavirus infections.

Italy daily death rate increases

Italy's daily death rate increases by 49 from the registered Friday figure. 619 people have died from the Covid-19 virus over the past 24 hours with the government confirming yesterday that lockdown restrictions would remain in place through to 3 May.

US surpasses Italy as country with most coronavirus-related deaths 

The United States nas now surpassed Italy to become the country with the most coronavirus-related deaths in the world. The U.S. has now reported 18,860 deaths, compared to Italy's 18,849, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. In total, the US has reported 503,594 cases of COVID-19. 

Hospital shocked after New York nurses' car tires slashed

Some nurses at a New York hospital, who had just finished a long a stressful shift, were appalled to see that their car tires has been slashed during their overnight shifts, AP reports. 

“We were shocked to hear of this incident, especially at this time when our employees are working tirelessly and courageously," hospital officials said in a statement to the Journal News.

New York schools will not reopen this school year

New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio, ha confirmed that public schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. 

New York has been the worst affected state during the cooronavirus crisis in the U.S., which has so far reported 501,680 cases and 18,789 deaths. 

Some good news on the home front, where Spain has recorded the lowest total number of daily fatalities in 19 days.

India lockdown extended

US death toll close to overtaking Italy

The United States is about to overtake Italy as the country with the world's highest coronavirus death toll, according to Johns Hopkins University's figures.

18,777 people have died of Covid-19 so far in the US, the Johns Hopkins live tracker reports - a death count that is now less than 100 below that of Italy.

This is the latest milestone in the spread of the coronavirus in America: on Friday, the total number of cases in the country moved past the 500,000 mark.
