On Wednesday Liga MX met with Mexico’s health authorities to discuss the future of currently postponed tournament after only 11 weeks since its starts. The conversation was not positive towards re-starting the league during the current coronavirus pandemic.

After listening to the health authorities the bosses of Liga MX met early this Friday to talk about how they could resume the 2020 Clausura season amid the outbreak. None of the scenarios were positive to stop the virus from spreading and keeping everyone safe and healthy so they came to the conclusion that it was best to cancel the whole thing.

After agreeing to end the current season it was also announced that there will be no champion either. This leaves Cruz Azul with no hope of resuming an amazing tournament and ending the drought of more than 20 years without lifting the title.

The president of the Liga MX wanted to resume activities

Enrique Bonilla, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 a few weeks ago, is the president of the Liga MX and he had a plan to resume activities amid the coronavirus outbreak. During the meeting on Friday morning it was the club owners who voted against resuming the 2020 Clausura season.

One of the major reasons for canceling the tournament was that 12 of Santos Laguna players tested positive for Covid-19 a few days ago and the rest of the teams did not want to face them in a match because they were scared of contracting the virus.

The women’s tournament was also canceled for the 2020 Clausura season and earlier this week it was also announced the cancellation of the Leagues Cup, Campeones Cup and the All-Star game between the best players in Liga MX and MLS for safety reasons.

New rules for the 2020 Apertura season

Mexico’s health authorities will give all the teams in the Liga MX a set of rules so the players can return to practice in the first week of June and in the next couple of days it will be determined when the 2020 Apertura season will officially start.

When that is determined it is expected that the tournament starts behind closed doors while the health authorities work on a plan to eventually let people in to enjoy the football games in each stadium.

As of the morning of 22 May there are 60,548 confirmed coronavirus cases in Mexico, 40,659 have recovered and 6,586 have died. The epicenter of the outbreak is currently Mexico City with 12,456 confirmed cases.
