50/50 for Oxford vaccine

The University of Oxford's Covid-19 vaccine trial has only a 50% chance of success as the coronavirus seems to be fading rapidly in Britain, the professor co-leading the development of the vaccine told the Telegraph newspaper.

Adrian Hill, director of Oxford's Jenner Institute, which has teamed up with drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc to develop the vaccine, said that an upcoming trial, involving 10,000 volunteers, threatened to return 'no result' due to low transmission of Covid-19 in the community.

'It's a race against the virus disappearing, and against time', Hill told the British newspaper. 'At the moment, there's a 50% chance that we get no result at all.'

No Indian vaccine by end of the year, experts say

The Times of India has been told by experts in the field that Indian efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine should not be expected to bear fruit in 2020.

"Research on a Covid vaccine in India is at a very early stage of development and any candidates are likely to reach animal trials only by the end of the year," the virologist Shahid Jameel said.

ICC urges cautious approach in restarting cricket

The International Cricket Council has issued guidelines to nations on restarting competitions, urging its members to adopt a safety-first approach.

“The resumption of cricket activities should begin only if there is no perceived or known risk that doing so might result in an increase in the local transmission rate,” the ICC said.

Cyclone Amphan loss estimated at $13bn in India

A powerful cyclone that tore through India's eastern state of West Bengal this week has caused a damage of 1 trillion rupees ($13 billion) to infrastructure and crops, state officials said.

Neighbouring Bangladesh, which also fell in Cyclone Amphan's path on Wednesday, initially said it had suffered a loss of 11 billion taka ($130 million). But this could rise, government officials said.

The two countries have lost at least 102 people in the cyclone, the most powerful in over a decade, mostly because of house collapses and electrocution.

More than 3 million people were evacuated before Amphan made landfall, preventing a large number of deaths.

Indian company "could be world's door to Covid-19 vaccine"

"If the world is to gain access to a vaccine for Covid-19, there’s a good chance it will pass through the doors of Serum Institute of India," report Abhirup Roy and Euan Rocha for Reuters.

The institute, which is "the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines by volume", is currently developing several candidates of its own, and could also be involved in the mass-production of the AstraZeneca/Oxford University drug that has been gaining major global media attention.
