Second stimulus check eligibility: What could happen with dependents and non-citizens?
President Donald Trump said that there could very well be a second round of stimulus payments but not anytime soon as states are reopening amid Covid-19 outbreak.
Millions of Americans face job losses or reduced income, they are looking to the government for financial help. The first round of one-time stimulus checks gave more than 152 million people a payment of $1,200 and hoping a second one comes amid the coronavirus pandemic. For now the only hope is if the Republican-controlled Senate approves the HEROES Act that was passed in the House of Representatives last week.
The Democrats bill calls for a second round of $1,200 payments for people in the same income threshold as the first round of checks but there are some major differences with dependents and non-citizens. The CARES Act only helped American citizens and left out immigrants, college students, amongst others.
The new bill would help those with children because the payments will increase from $500 to $1,200 per dependent, with a maximum of three dependents. This means that under the HEROES Act families could get up to $6,000 because more dependents would also be eligible. Also the age cap would be lifted to include those ages 17 and up.
Another benefit of this new proposed bill is that non-citizens qualify for the second stimulus check. Those undocumented immigrants, who do not have a Social Security Number (SSN) but have been paying their taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) would be elegible for stimulus relief.
