Los Angeles County experienced a turbulent weekend following the death of George Floyd. Violent protests and looting started on Friday night in downtown Los Angeles and spread across the city on Saturday and Sunday. In an attempt to get the situation back under control, the Major of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti has decided to order a curfew for its residents from 6 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

All of Los Angeles County has been under curfew since Saturday but seeing as the violence and looting continues, it has been extended to Monday and could be extended throughout this week. The cities of Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, both which experienced serious looting and violence over the weekend, will impose rigorous curfew on Monday.

Santa Monica and Beverly Hills announced that they will impose citywide curfews that start at 1 p.m. on Monday for their business districts and 4 p.m. citywide. The curfew will remain in place until 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Both cities were looted over the weekend.

Beverly Hills was looted and several areas were set on fire on Saturday in its Fairfax District and Rodeo Drive stores. While Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade was also devastated by looting and fires throughout Sunday. Stores like Whole Foods, Vons, etc., were heavily looted this weekend as protesters ran amok.

In a news conference Monday morning, Santa Monica Police Chief Cynthia Renaud said more than 400 people had been arrested on Sunday on various charges, including burglary, looting and assault with a deadly weapon. She said 95% of the suspects were not residents of Santa Monica. She called the looters “opportunists” who track where protests will be taking place and look to take advantage of the fact that law enforcement resources will be stretched thin.

“So what we can glean from intelligence online is that there are opportunists who are tracking where peaceful protests are occurring, and they are then going to that city, knowing that resources will be tied up in ensuring First Amendment rights to free speech. They take advantage of that. And they loot and they perform criminal activity,” Renaud said.

It is important to note that officials said if a city curfew kicks in later than the L.A. County curfew, the county curfew takes effect instead.
