As global cases climb, Italian doctor claims virus is weakening

The claim made by Dr. Matteo Bassetti has been disputed by many global experts as cases of Covid-19 increase in many parts of the world.

An Italian based infectious disease medic believes the Covid-19 virus has become less dangerous with the passing of time and could even disappear on its own without a vaccine.

Dr. Matteo Bassetti is the head of the infectious diseases clinic based in Genoa at the San Martino hospital, said the virus appears to have become less potent, possibly due to genetic mutations.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, the Italian doctor stated: "It was like an aggressive tiger in March and April but now it’s like a wild cat. Even elderly patients, aged 80 or 90, are now sitting up in bed and they are breathing without help. The same patients would have died in two or three days before.

He added that one possible reason for this pattern change in the virus could be a result of social distancing measures.

“I think the virus has mutated because our immune system reacts to the virus and we have a lower viral load now due to the lockdown, mask-wearing, social distancing,” he said. “We still have to demonstrate why it’s different now.”

Contrary view

Bassett's views however have met with some stern resistance from other medical experts who refute his claim that the coronavirus is losing it's power.

Dr. Oscar McLean from the University of Glasgow countered the Italian's claims stating: "Bassetti's claims seem fairly implausible on genetic grounds" adding "without significantly stronger evidence, no one should unnecessarily downplay the danger this highly virulent virus poses, and risk the ongoing society-wide response."
