Real Madrid: Camavinga plans up in the air

The player is weighing up whether to accept offers to join Bayern or PSG rather than wait a year for Real Madrid, who won't be making signings this summer.

Real Madrid's recent league triumph has reinforced Florentino Pérez's idea not to make any big signings this summer. The president feels that the current squad has sufficient depth and youth and there is no need to enter the markets this time - and on top of that, the club, like everyone else, has see a significant drop on income as a result of the coronavirus crisis. That message has reached the agents of players who have been linked to Real Madrid - including the best-placed to join, Eduardo Camavinga. It's bad news for the 17-year-old French midfielder who had his heart set on joining Zidane's team. The problem, as far as AS understands, is that Camavinga's agent, Moussa Sissoko has told the club that he does not know whether it will be possible for the player to wait until the right moment arrives for him to join Madrid at a future date. Camavinga has serious offers on the table from other clubs and now he has to decide what he wants to do.

PSG and Bayern interested in Camavinga

Camavinga, the new sensation of European football, who features in the team of the year for both L'Equipe and France Football this season, could end up going somewhere else. He is under contract until 2022, and now was the ideal moment for him to make the leap to join Real Madrid. But other clubs are ready to pounce. PSG have long been interested and more recently, Bayern Munich have been making efforts to convince the player and appear to be the favourites to land him.

AS has been told by those close to Camavinga that he is growing increasingly frustrated by the situation - with a transfer to Madrid off until next summer at least, Rennes contacted the player's agent to start talks about a new contract. But when new Director of Sport Maurice, joined the club from Olympique Lyon, he inadvertently put the teenager on the market by stating that Rennes would not be willing to sell Camavinga for anything less than 80 million euros. Camavinga is Rennes' star player but after not receiving an offer to renew, he is thinking about moving to a more high profile club where his game can develop.

Rennes' Champions League hopes

The problem for Rennes is that they are hoping on qualifying for the Champions League. If they manage to do so, they will gain an extra 20 million euros from television rights and would invest part of that in giving Camavinga a pay rise. At the moment, the midfielder earns two million euros after tax. However if they don't qualify for the Champions League group stage, they might decide that the best option would be to cash in on Camavinga - and not make the same mistake they made with Ousmane Dembele, who they sold to Borussia Dortmund for 20 million, who then sold him on to Barça for 140 million...
