House speaker Nancy Pelosi has joined the fray in an ongoing war of words between President Donald Trump and the Democrats over the White House’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. As of 14:00 CEST on 27 July, there have been over 4.2 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the US with more than 146,000 people losing their lives to the disease.

Speaking on CBS on Sunday, Pelosi used a favoured Trump tactic and bestowed a nickname on the president, labelling him “Mr. Make Matters Worse.” Trump has faced fierce criticism over his administration’s response to the coronavirus crisis against a backdrop of nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent response from the Black Lives Matter movement.

In recent days, the president has sent federal forces into Portland and threatened to launch a “surge” in other major cities – most of them controlled by Democratic leaders – under the auspice of Operation Legend in an unfortunate allusion to the hugely unpopular decision by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush to increase the number of US troops on the ground in Iraq in 2007.

Pelosi: "Delay, denial, it's a hoax... and we're in this situation"

Nancy Pelosi, joined by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, speaks about efforts to pass new coronavirus aid legislation.

Taking aim at Trump’s claims earlier in the Covid-19 crisis that the pandemic would simply “go away” before a vaccine was required to restore confidence to business and tourism worldwide.

“Those viruses have never shown up again. They die, too. Like everything else, they die. It is going to go away and we’re not going to see it ever again, hopefully, after a period of time. I just rely on what doctors say,” said Trump in May.

He has made matters worse from the start -- delay, denial, it’s a hoax, it’ll go away magically, it’s a miracle, and all the rest -- and we’re in this situation,” Pelosi said on CBS show “Face the Nation.”

Trump: "Pelosi was dancing in the streets of Chinatown"

Trump has always been quick to hand his political opponents a moniker, consistently calling Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton “Crooked” during the 2016 election campaign and handing his current rival for the keys to the White House, Joe Biden, the prefix of “Sleepy.”

So it was little surprise when the president used his preferred outlet of social media to send Pelosi a rejoinder, calling the House speaker “Crazy Nancy Pelosi” on Twitter.
