Héctor Herrera: "I would eat once a day when I was playing for Tampico"

Atlético Madrid is set to play RB Leipzig on 13 August in the quarter-inals of the UEFA Champions League. Prior to that game the manager Diego Simeone gave his players a few days of vacation to relax and the midfielder Héctor Herrera decided to spend some time with his family.

The Mexican player used his social media account to publish a video of him eating meat with his family and also shared a couple of anecdotes about when he first started his career. Herrera also shared with his followers that one of his favorite hobbies is to grill meat with friends and family.

"When I was playing for Tampico I would eat once a day and I was not ashamed to say it. I think that gave me the motivation to keep improving as a footballer. By the way they didn’t even pay me when I was at Tampico," he tweeted.

Herrera started his career in Tampico and in 2011 he made his debut with Pachuca in the first division of the Mexican league. Two years after being one of the best players he signed with Porto, where he became the captain, and since 2019 he has been with Atlético Madrid.

Focused on the Champions League

Atlético Madrid still has 10 days until they play their quarter-final game against RB Leipzig, but apparently Simeone already has his starting 11 lined up. The 50-year-old has in mind putting Koke and Saúl Ñíguez in the center of the field, with Yannick Carrasco on the left and Ángel Correa on the right. Simeone also has in mind putting Diego Costa and Marcos Llorente up top.

According to several reports, Simeone will start Santiago Arias on one side and Kieran Trippier on the other. The two center backs could be José Giménez and Stefan Savic, with big names like Álvaro Morata, João Felix and Héctor Herrera left on the bench.
