Barcelona vs Napoli live: Champions League last 16 - as it happened

Leo Messi proved to be the "Everest" Gennaro Gattuso alluded to with the Argentinean leading his side to victory with a vintage display in Camp Nou.

Champions League quarter-finals confirmed

Manchester City vs Lyon

RB Leipzig vs Atlético Madrid

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Atalanta vs Paris Saint-Germain

Barcelona and Bayern Munich will be the only former champions in the mix in Lisbon for the quarter-finals, and they'll play each other first.

And there's the whistle! Napoli had their chances but failed to take them and Barça are in the quarter-finals where they will face Bayern Munich after the Bundesliga champions thumped Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate.

90+3

Nice work from Politano tees up Di Lorenzo in the area but his shot is straight at Ter Stegen, who employs a firm hand to make the save.

90+2

Monchu gets his first touch as a senior Barça player and concedes a free kick against Lobotka.

90+1

Napoli concede a free-kick on the edge of the Barça area and Luis Suárez finds himself in the book for taking his time to leave the field with Junior Firpó on for Barça.

90

Five minutes added...

89

The visitors are running out of ideas as Barça drop back to defend their advantage.

87

Semedo goes on a run down the right and attempts to slip the ball to Suárez but he overcooks it and it's straight into the gloves of Ospina.

85

Lozano hits the post! Ter Stegen had it covered to be fair but it's another reminder for Barça's back four that this is not over.

84

A little over five minutes now for Napoli to conjur two goals...

83

A senior Barcelona debut for Monchu, who replaces Griezmann after another low-key performance from the France striker.

81

No, no review on that one. Gattuso is incensed but the ref seems to agree with his lino that the Poland striker was offside.

80

Goooooooo... nope, the flag is up against Milik. It will be reviewed though....

79

Elmas and Milik on for Napoli as Gattuso throws the kitchen sink at a two-goal deficit.

78

Ter Stegen repels Napoli's third consecutive corner.

77

Penalty appeal! Napoli feel Manolas was inpinged in the area but the ref waves play on, correctly as it turns out as the Greek defender clearly slipped.

76

Napoli win a corner as Politano's effort is deflected behind. Luis Suárez is on the turf at the other end and Setién may be forced into a change.

73

Napoli running out of time now. The visitors still need two here. Griezmann, who frankly we'd forgotten was on the pitch, wins a free kick to chew up a few more precious seconds.

70

Lozano! The Mexican almost makes an immediate impact as he gets on the end of a long ball in the area but he can't land his shot on target!

68

Changes from Gattuso... Callejón and Zielinski off, Politano and Lozano on.

67

We can safely say we wouldn't like to find out what it feels like to have Koulibaly run into you at full speed and crunch you in the back. Anyone interested can send a postcard to Suárez, L. C/O Camp Nou.

66

Messi! The Argentinean almost finds Suárez with an acrobatic assist inside the area but it's too close to Ospina and the Napoli keeper gratefuly gathers that one up.

65

Some tired legs on both sides now and Napoli's flurry at the start of the half has petered out somewhat.

63

Free kick for Barça a far way out as Lobotka floors Jordi Alba.

60

Both managers probably mulling changes at this stage. It won't take long for Setién to decide what to pull from his bench but Gattuso has several options for turning this game around.

No need to elaborate on this...

59

First booking of the game as Zielinski gets a ticking off for hauling Messi back. He didn't have much choice as it was green, green grass all the way to Ospina's goal.

58

Another corner for Napoli... this time Ter Stegen takes control of his area and punches clear.

We rather missed this... Lobotka on for Demme at the break. A slightly more attack-minded midfielder and former Celta player.

54

Fabián finds his way into the area but he dithers a little too long and a decent opening goes begging. Barça break and Suárez thinks he has a sniff of a chance but Manolas has other ideas and snuffs out the danger.

52

Mertens! He probably had more time than he thought there as Insigne's skewed shot found the Belgian in the area but he sends a tame header straight at Ter Stegen. Barça weathering a storm in their own half here.

52

Piqué deals with it and sends it as far as he can get it from the Barça area. It's all Napoli at the moment.

51

Another corner for Napoli as Fabián's shot is deflected.

50

Koulibaly again comes storming onto the delivery but Nelson Semedo does enough to put him off his stride and the header doesn't trouble Ter Stegen.

49

It's a decent delivery and the onrushing Koulibaly meets it at full pelt. It's deflected behind for a corner...

49

Free-kick for Napoli as Rakitic clips Zielinski...

48

Napoli are out of the blocks quickly at the start of the second half. We'd imagine a Gattuso half-time team talk is not for the faint-hearted.

47

Insigne tests out Messi's mettle and the Barça captain hops back up after the challenge. Huge relief for Can Barça.

46

We're off again! Let's hope for more of the same in the second half. More drama than an Eastenders Christmas special in 10 minutes at the end of the first.

We're about to get back underway and the big news is Messi is back on the pitch. He doesn't look entirely comfortable though and Ansu Fati has been warming up.

One for the Insigne scrapbook...

An even half in terms of possession but Barça have been more accurate in front of goal. Insigne's penalty was the only Napoli shot on target in the opening 45 but what a different story it could have been had Mertens' shot snuck in the post rather than off it in the second minute.

That's a pretty amazing statistic but Barça's chief concern now will be whether their talisman can add to that in the second half. We'll find out soon enough. It's worth noting that beyond Ansu Fati, Barça have little in reserve this evening and both Suárez and Griezmann have been fairly anonymous.

45+6

And there goes the whistle! Frantic finish to the opening 45 in Camp Nou and what a second half in prospect.

45+5

Barça stop Callejón from scoring in extremis! Napoli get to the byline and the ball is squared for the Spaniard but just nicked off his boot before he could bury it from close range! What an end to the half!

45+4

Goooooooooool! Napoli are back in the hunt! Insigne sends Ter Stegen sprawling the wrong way and it's now 3-1 on the night, 4-2 on aggregate!

Insigne places the ball on the spot...

45+3

And they'll have a chance to pull one back straight away as Rakitic floors Mertens and the ref points to the spot!

45+2

Well, the upshot of all that for Napoli is that they now need three to progress.

45+1

Five minutes added. But Messi is limping. It remains to be seen if he'll be back out after the break.

45

Gooooooooool! Suárez blasts past Ospina and in a perfect end to the half for the hosts Messi hobbles on to congratulate his strike partner.

45

Suárez steps up...

44

Penalty! The match officials decide that was a foul! A bit harsh in our humble view but it remains unclear who'll take as Messi is still getting treatment.

Koulibaly was running into the Napoli area with Messi in pursuit, the Barça forward tried to pinch the ball and Koulibaly went through him but the Napoli defender was facing the other way.

43

The ref has trotted over to the monitor to see what happened there up close...

41

Koulibaly back up on his feet, Messi still down... We imagine VAR will be having a look at this in a minute.

40

Nervous moments for Barça as that looks like it could be a nasty one... Messi clutching his ankle after Koulibaly, quite accidentally it has to be said, cracked him as he tried to clear the ball.

39

Ouch! Messi and Koulibaly go into a challenge and both hit the deck in agony. Barça after a penalty....

Another Messi milestone

36

And now there's more bother for Gattuso as Fabián goes down in a heap after a challenge with Lenglet. It looks like he'll be ok to continue though.

35

But Barça clear and break into the opposition half again. Napoli need to make more of any chances they have from dead balls.

34

Free kick to Napoli in an interesting area... the big guns are up.

31

Napoli handed a reprieve... can they do anything with it?

31

And it's ruled out! Messi can't believe it!

30

But there'll be a handball review as the officials see just what Messi controlled that with. It looked perfectly clear it was his chest but you can't be too careful.

29

Goooooooooooool! Messi! A lovely ball to the Argentinean, who takes out his marker with sublime control on his chest, and all he has to do is belt it past Ospina from two yards out!

28

But there's always room for a flap under the sticks! Ter Stegen and Piqué get their wires crossed and Insigne almost finds a way through.

27

The visitors are attempting to pick a way through but after their earlier wobble Barça have gained confidence from the cushion and are now set up like a side Gattuso would recognise from the 90s.

Yup, Barça are not overstating that. Worth sitting through a highlights show wherever you are this evening just to see that goal from the wee wizard.

23

Napoli really need to find a reply quickly or Barça could end this by half time. 3-1 on aggregate now and the hosts have the advantage of Griezmann's away goal in San Paolo.

The Argentinean wriggles into the area and rides three challenges, rising from the floor to jab the ball into the far corner bewteen two defenders! Extraordinary from the number 10!

22

Messi! Magic!

21

It's sent in towards Insigne but he can't get over the header and it loops up and over for a goal kick.

20

Chance for the visitors to create something from a free-kick out on the rigth as Demme is the filling between a Barça defensive sandwich.

19

Gattuso looking increasingly like he wants to strap on some boots and get into that midfield... Barça in total control of the middle of the park at the moment.

17

Barça happy to knock it about a bit now and wait to see what Napoli have in response to that early blow.

We're going to go out a limb here and say that Bayern Munich are probably heading into the quarter-finals as Lewandowski makes it 4-0 on aggregate against Chelsea.

13

Rakitic! The Croatian tries his luck from a fair way out and it whistles past Ospina's near post before thudding into a hoarding. Decent effort.

12

Still, the visitors only need one to level the tie on aggregate and there's plenty of time left on the clock.

10

But the ref says no dice and it stands! Napoli aren't happy but the score board reads 1-0 to the home side!

10

Hello... VAR having a look at a possible foul by Luis Suárez.

9

Gooooooooooooool! Lenglet! Rakitic delivers and the Frenchman finds some space in the box to nod it past Ospina!

9

Chance for Barça! Alba breaks and finds Messi on the edge of the area. The Barça captain lets fly first time and it's deflected behind for a corner...

8

Another warning shot across Barça's bow as Zielinski fires high after good work from Mertens on the left.

6

Napoli clear with ease though and the visitors get their foot on the ball again.

5

Messi is dispossesed by Koulibaly but then floored near the area as Barça win a corner.

3

Barça do not look comfortable at all getting the ball out from the back and Napoli appear considerably sharper than Setién's side in the opening minutes, pressing all over the pitch and preventing the home side from getting forward.

2

Mertens! Off the post! Big mistake from Piqué to let the Belgium forward in and even though he didnt' get a sweet contact on the strike it still clips the upright with Ter Stegen rooted to the spot. Gattuso can't believe it!

1

It's a warm one in Barcelona this evening, the mercury touching 30º...

1

We're off!

Here we go with the Champions League anthem, both sides wearing shirts that say "thank you" to front-line health workers combating the Covid-19 pandemic.

We're just a few minutes from kick-off in Camp Nou as the players prepare to come out onto the turf...

In other news, Juventus have named Andrea Pirlo as their new first team manager after sacking Maurizio Sarri this afternoon. Pirlo is surely a candidate for the fastest fast-track in senior managerial history having been named coach of the under-23 side only a week ago.

That "Everest" Gattuso was referring to....

Gattuso meanwhile can call on the most expensive player in Napoli's history, Lozano, Juventus target Milik, former Spain international Llorente and Brazil midfielder Allan if he wants to shake things up.

Here's Barça's bench, with Junior Firpó the only senior outfield player available to Setién this evening. Ansu Fati is bound to get a look-in at some point but otherwise the Barça boss will be hoping his starting XI can get the job done with little in terms of European or big game experience in reserve.

While Barcelona have plenty of missing players, Gattuso's only injury concern was club captain and talisman Lorenzo Insigne, who finally passed a fitness test and will start this evening. There has probably never been a better time in recent years to play Barcelona in a 90-minute duke-out for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals and we've already had two shock exits in the last 24 hours.

Arthur Melo, who has not exactly had the Barcelona career he envisaged after all the kerfuffle to sign him, has reportedly been denied access to Camp Nou to watch this evening's game. The Brazilian refused to train recently, failed to undergo a coronavirus test like the rest of the squad and was caught yawning in the stands during the loss to Osasuna. After returning to Catalonia from Turin, where he has signed an agreement with Juventus, Catalan media report that he has been had his heels warmed to the exit door after trying to grab a seat in the stands for the game because he did not undergo a PCR test, as laid out in UEFA regulations for entry to the stadium.

Napoli's starting XI confirmed

Gattuso has also gone for his most trusted line-up with Mertens and Insigne up top and a pretty solid defensive line screened by Germany defensive midfielder Diego Demme

It looks as though Sergi Roberto will slot into midfield with Rakitic and De Jong in a 4-3-3, with Messi, Suárez and Griezmann leading the line.

Barcelona's starting XI confirmed

Quique Setién has announced his starting XI for this evening's game. There are few surprises, given what he has available, with the bulk of his available senior players getting on the team sheet.

The reward for getting through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in Lisbon is a likely meeting with Bayern Munich, who host Chelsea in the Allianz Arena where they will defend a 3-0 lead from the first leg.

Among the notable absentees are Sergio Busquets, Arturo Vidal, Ousmane Dembélé and Samuel Umtiti.

Here's Barcelona's squad list for this evening's game, which is padded out with a fair number of Barça B players.

Napoli have also blown hot and cold under Gattuso since he took over last December, losing four of their first five under the former Italy midfielder before stabilising during the middle of the season and then tailing off again towards the end. Their last game was a 3-1 victory over high-flying Lazio though.

This is how Barça's last 10 in LaLiga look.

Gattuso said in his pre-match press conference that playing Barcelona is like "climbing Everest" but in reality the Azulgrana have been out of sorts since the restart, drawing three in LaLiga before surendering the title with a home defeat against Osasuna in the penultimate round of fixtures.

Here's a look at Napoli's squad, which is a bit fuller than Setién's. A smattering of familiar Spanish talent in José Callejón, Fabián Ruiz and Fernando Llorente but of course Napoli can't call on Nigeria international Victor Osimhen, who was signed recently fron Lille.

Not helping the under-fire Setién's cause any is the fact that Barcelona have just 13 senior squad members available for tonight's game.

Full story:

It has long been speculated that Setién will need to deliver the Champions League to Camp Nou for the first time since 2015 to have any chance of remaining in his post beyond this month amid reports of a dressing room rift and a lack of understanding with Leo Messi.

Barcelona vs Napoli: welcome

Barcelona will be aiming to rescue their season when Napoli visit Camp Nou on Saturday evening - and Quique Setién will be looking to salvage his job for another week.

After watching Real Madrid win LaLiga, being knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Athletic Bilbao and defeat against Atlético in the Spanish Super Cup, Barça face a trophyless season for the first time since 2007-08

For Napoli and Gennaro Gattuso, tonight's game represents a free hit against one of the competition's heavyweights, albeit against a side that has been depserately lacking in form since the restart.
