Juventus have appointed Andrea Pirlo as the club’s new manager following the sacking of Maurizio Sarri on Saturday.

Sarri led Juventus to the Serie A title in his first season in charge in Turin. But the Old Lady’s shocking elimination by Lyon from the Champions League last 16 on Friday night prompted his swift dismissal.

Pirlo is set to take the reins of the first team just over a week after he was named the Juventus Under-23 coach. The former Italian international has signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2022.

Maurizio Sarri was sacked by Juventus on Saturday after the club's Champions League exit.

Juventus job will be Pirlo's first coaching role

This will be the 41-year-old’s first managerial role following his retirement in 2017 after three seasons in the MLS with New York City.

The World Cup winning midfielder, who made 116 caps for Italy, played for Juventus from 2011 to 2015, joining the Bianconeri after 10 years with AC Milan. During his time in Turin, Pirlo made 119 appearances, scoring 16 goals.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, along with former Juventus coaches Massimiliano Allegri and Antonio Conte, were linked with the position but the Juve board have decided to place their trust in rookie Pirlo despite his lack of experience.

Juventus statement on Pirlo appointment

“Today, begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football, as it was said almost a week ago: from Maestro to Mister,” Juventus said in a statement published on its website following the announcement.

“From today he will be THE coach for people of Juventus, as the club has decided to entrust him with the technical leadership of the First Team, after having already selected him for Juventus Under 23.

“Today's choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new successes.”

The first-time coach is set for a major challenge and will likely be expected to retain the Serie A title next season, as well as carry Juventus to a Champions League final after this season’s bitter disappointment.
