Man City 1-3 Lyon: Dembélé double sets up Bayern semi

Manchester City vs Lyon live: Champions League quarter-final live 15/8/20

On the whistle match report

Simon Evans' report from Lisbon:

Substitute Moussa Dembélé struck twice as Olympique Lyonnais stunned Manchester City with a 3-1 victory on Saturday to move into the semi-finals of the Champions League where they will face Bayern Munich.

Lyon took the lead in the 24th minute with a fine finish from Maxwel Cornet, who spotted Ederson off his line and beat him with a low drive from the edge of the box.

City drew level through a Kevin De Bruyne side-foot finish in the 69th minute and pushed forward in search of winner but were caught out on the break.

Dembélé broke free and Ederson's outstretched leg couldn't keep his shot out of the net.

City had a golden chance to draw level moments later but Raheem Sterling somehow blasted over from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Lyon responded by taking advantage of chaos in the City defence with Ederson pushing out a low shot from Houssem Aouar and Dembélé pouncing for his second.

How many times, Pep, how many times?

"The idea that Pep Guardiola over‑complicates knockout games has become such a truism it seems impossible a manager of such clarity of thought could still be following that pattern; still finding ways to insert his own anxieties, his maniacal intellectualism into the fine details of elite knockout football.

And yet, here we are once again."

Report from our correspondent Will Gittins:

Guardiola on slumping out of the Champions League

Speaking to BT Sport, the City boss said, "One day we will break this gap to the semi. In the first 20, 25 minutes we struggled to find spaces to attack. The second half was OK – we were there. I had a feeling we were better. You have to be perfect in this competition.”

Guardiola refused to be drawn on on the possible foul on Laporte in the build-up to the second goal: “I don’t want to talk about these circumstances. It looks like I’m complaining and finding excuses. We did a lot of good things, but it wasn’t enough. We made mistakes in the boxes in key moments. We struggled to find our spaces to attack.”

As to Sterling's miss, the former Barça coach said: “In this situation you have to equalise to take it to extra time, but then we concede the third and it’s over. We created more chances and more shots. We are disappointed. We now go on holidays. Then we have to lift the players when they return to the club again. Sometimes you have to break this (barrier to the semis). The team over last few years deserve it. Maybe one day we’ll break this gap.”

Misses for the ages

Twitter right now is filled with some of the finest misses of all time in reaction to Sterling's shocker. This one from Rosenthal is without doubt worse. But don't make any mistake, Sterling's was bad. Really bad.

Guardiola feared for his job back in February if this happened...

Mbappé enjoying Lyon ploughing past City

1995-96

This will be the first time since 1995-96 that no English or Spanish sides will be in the Champions League semi-finals.

One way of putting it...

Sterling

The moment

Sterling just had to tap this home and City would have probably won it. As it was he somehow blasted over and Lyon went up the other end and scored.

Semi-finals

After their win tonight, Lyon will play Bayern on Wednesday, 19 August at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The first semi-final will be Leipzig vs PSG on Tuesday, 18 August at the Estadio da Luz.

The final will be on Sunday, 23 August at the Estadio da Luz.

All kick-off times will be 21:00.

City bossed possession 71.7% to 28.3%. But possession doesn't decide football matches.

Guardiola at City in the Champions League

2016-17: Round of 16
2017-18: Quarter-final
2018-19: Quarter-final
2019-20: Quarter-final

Wow, indeed.

Lyon through to the semi-finals!

Gabriel Jesus is in tears. Slumped on the turf.

Full time! Lyon are through! 3-1 it ends and City's Champions League dreams are left in tatters once again.

90+5

Another City corner, another Sterling run. But it all comes to nothing.

90+3

Sterling wins a free-kick out on the left. De Bruyne smashes it straight at the goal and Lopes AGAIN palms away. From the corner Walker leaps salmon-like but his header is a smidgen off target and Lyon breath again.

90+2

Cancelo the next to try his luck, firing a ball into the box. Cleared. City won't give up but in their hearts the flame is fading rapidly.

90+1

City pressuring away but Lyon standing firm against everything Pep's side can throw at them.

90

FIVE minutes of time added on.

89

City were so dominant at the start of this second half, it felt they would eventually do enough to turn this around, and when the first goal came it looked almost a certainty. But football is football and Lyon kept their heads, Rudi made the sub, brought Dembélé on and he's bagged a brace that looks like it'll be enough to send Lyon through.

87

Dembélé! 3-1. You wouldn't believe it. Ederson has a complete nightmare and gifts the ball to Dembélé who taps home to make it 3-1.

86

Oh goodness. That's a massive, massive, massive, massive miss from Sterling. Just has to tap in and somehow he fires it over. Pep's on his knees in despair.

84

Nice ball fired in by De Bruyne, but Lopes flies high and athletically to grab it.

84

Silva on! He replaces Rodri.

That shove on Walker before is being widely given as a penalty on twitter.

81

City have been well on top in this second half, but Lyon are back in front.

80

Dembélé fired it under Ederson's left leg. It took a touch but still bounced in.

80

Huge discussions  going on between the City players and the ref, explaining why they think it shouldn't be a goal. Not sure why because it's reviewed on a video screen some distance away. Goal stands. 2-1 Lyon.

80

Absolute disaster from the City backline.

There'll be an offside check but it looks fine from here.

79

Well there's an impact sub. Dembélé! Bish, bash, bosh. 2-1 Lyon!

77

Jesus! Meets a cross inside the box and... fires into the deck and the ball bounces over. That was a fine chance. Pep gives it two hands to the head.

76

Pep screaming about a handball in the box. The referee ignores him, which is fair enough as Jesus' shot came off a defender's thigh.

74

Dembélé on for Depay, who is less than pleased by the decision.

74

Tete on for Dubois.

73

Lyon SO close to getting in behind the City line but the final touch is too heavy and lets Ederson get there first.

73

Lopes! Saves from Jesus!

71

Cornet tumbles in the box under attention from Walker. The City player did push him, but the referee was uninterested and the Lyon player didn't make a big fuss about it.

70

Lovely skills from Sterling to set up De Bruyne who popped it home so, so neatly.

70

Sterling to De Bruyne who fires into the right corner!

68

Ooooh, tasty De Bruyne run from midfield. But the final shot is easily blocked.

68

Cancelo gives Rodri an earful after an overhit pass in behind the defence. Seems a bit harsh.

66

De Bruyne tires to curl it in the top corner but it's always going wide.

65

Marcelo booked for a heavy one on Jesus. Decent free-kick for De Bruyne.

63

Marcal! Slim chance for Lyon, with the ball breaking Marcal who batters one from distance, but Ederson is well up to it.

60

The game has completely changed from the first half. It's all City, with Lyon doing what they can to stop the runs from Pep's side. You wouldn't think the French side would be able to keep City out for 30 minutes if the dynamic continues like this.

59

Marcelo batters Jesus to the ground. Dangerous free-kick to City. De Bruyne over it. 28 metres out. De Bruyne strikes it, but Lopes is well up to it  and pushes it away.

58

Rodri scythes Bruno and that's a well deserved yellow.

56

Fernandinho off for Riyad Mahrez for City.

55

It's mostly City here, but they are lacking the imagination to find gaps in the Lyon defence. Rudi's side fairly happy to sit tight and let City come onto them for the moment. Lyon giving away a lot of corners though.

54

Fernandinho penalised for excessive force on Cornet as they tussled for the ball out on the right.

53

Long ball across cleared behind for a City corner, which is sent behind by a defender for another corner. De Bruyne sends it in again and it's cleared.

50

Another long spell of possession from City and a sharp ball into De Bruyne sees him try a cheeky back-heel which is into the box, but only to keeper Lopes.

48

Nice possession from City moving it around the midfield, but they're not sure when to try and play a dangerous ball through. When they do, down the left, Cornet is there to cover.

47

Corner well won off Laporte by Ekamibi out on the right. Lyon can't make anything of it though.

No changes at half-time.

Second half underway!!

City look very serious. Job to be done here and they think they can do it is the clear message.

Teams heading back out...

One-legged affairs

(See tweet below) City were trailing 2-1 in that game against Schalke and ended up winning 2-3. They also won the second leg 7-0...

It's going to be a fascinating final 45 here. Just taking a quick peep at the betting houses and City are still favourites to win this, though by a lot less than 45 minutes ago. It's probably fair enough, going on the strength in depth of the sides and the last 10 minutes of the first half. But it's still quite something, with just 45 minutes to play and how Lyon performed over the whole of that half.

Lyon will be worried by City's control of the last 10 minutes of the half, where they looked in pretty much complete control, only lacking the final ball. Expect Rodri's heavily scribbled in notepad to shake things up early on in the second half.

Cornet's goal was so well taken. The ball came back from a clash between a defender and Ekambi, with Ederson having raced out to try and cover the danger. Cornet had an eye of a needle to thread the ball through to get it into the net and he hit it sublimely. 1-0. And so far City have been unable to respond.

Half-time! Guardiola's unexpected line-up fails to produce the goods in the first half, with a long range Cornet shot the difference between the sides.

45

Sterling! The City striker gets a ball out on the right and his shot is blocked for a corner.

Guardiola's selection does appear to be the topic of the night...

43

City beginning to turn the screw here. Last ditch defence effort there to turn a De Bruyne cross behind for a corner. It comes to nothing but the ebb and flow of the encounter is all in City's favour right now.

42

City settling into some decent possession and Sterling is released down the right channel in the box. He cuts back to Rodri whose shot is well saved by Lopes. Some lovely play there from City.

40

De Bruyne loses out in the box and obstructs Bruno as he tries to get position. He's raging at the foul being blown against him. City getting more and more frustrated here.

39

Boom! Another De Bruyne missile from a dead ball at the goals that Lopes manages to punch away. That one has got to sting.

pep

Guardiola getting more and more frustrated as this match goes on.

37

Fernandinho and Aouar need medical attention after a clash of heads.

36

City beginning to stamp some authority on the midfield, but they're struggling to get into the danger zone.

35

Cancelo on the run, beating a couple of challenges, but he's eventually stopped.

33

Another clumsy foul from Fernandinho. Depay pops it in but its cleared.

Lovely curl...

32

Lopes! Another fine intervention from the Lyon keeper, coming out to cut off a dangerous ball.

31

Cornet beats De Bruyne all ends up, getting on the end of a long ball down the left and leaving the City man with no idea where the ball had gone.

30

Depay floats the ball into the box but Walker is fastest to it and gives it an agricultural hoof to safety.

29

Fernandinho into the book. Cynical foul to stop Aouar striding forward.

28

Lopes! Punches a stinging De Bruyne free-kick to safety.

24

Cornet's strike from outside the box counts! Pep chuntering away at the fourth official, convinced there was something wrong there, but the goal stands. Ederson had come for the ball which Ekambi was fighting for, and it broke back to Cornet who hit an absolutely inch perfect curler inside the near post to give Lyon the lead.

24

VAR having a look... but looks like Walker was playing Cornet onside.

24

Lyon!!! Boom!!!

23

City nearly in down the left, but Sterling's ball across is well cut out.

20

The ball breaks back from the City box to Marcal who hits one, which will probably count as a shot on target but was really just any old way to stop City starting a break. Ederson then launches a 70 yard ball onto De Bruyne's right foot, which is pretty special, but he goes for an early cross which flies right and into Lopes' arms.

19

Lovely, lovely running from Cornet, picking it up in midfield, giving, going and getting the ball back out on the left. He fires one into the box, but can't pick out a Lyon shirt.

16

City might well be favourites for this, but Lyon right now are playing superbly. Controlling it where they need to and using their pace to cause City problems.

15

De Bruyne with a lazy foul on Aouar in the centre circle. Lyon want a yellow, but the ref's having none of it.

14

Cornet's got a long old throw on him.

13

Another fast move from Lyon, cut out by a City defender and out for a throw on the right, which ends up recycled across the pitch and out for a throw 20 yards further back.

12

Leo Dubois into the book for a heavy one on Cancelo who tumbles in agony. Dubois tries to explain himself but to no avail.

11

Pretty open first 10 minutes, mostly Manchester City but Lyon very happy to head forward on the break.

9

De Bruyne fires in a heavy cross that's cleared and Lyon are straight up the other end, win a corner and that comes back to Marcal who lashes one low at Ederson, who gathers fairly comfortably on the deck. As you were.

6

City playing with three centre-halves. Pep loves trying what people wouldn't expect.

5

Walker nearly chests a cross into his own net - nice move from Lyon which ended up with a too-deep ball which Walker tried to control back to his keeper, but which ended up with Ederson scrambling to save just inside his near post.

4

Heart stopping moment for Lyon early doors there. Rudi Garcia sits on his bench scribbling furiously in his notebook...

3

Marcelo JUST cuts out a square ball across from Sterling that would have been a tap in for Jesus!

2

Long ball from City into the Lyon box for Jesus to chase, but keeper Lopes is always getting there first.

2

Isn't De Bruyne a fantastic player. Takes one touch and he just caresses the ball where he wants it.

1

City get us underway, knock it back and launch it high and wide to the right. A morass of bodies fight it out and nothing particularly interesting comes of it.

Off we go! Manchester City vs Lyon. Who gets to play Bayern?

Teams coming out at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. All set for THE anthem.

Warm-up!

Subs heading out to the stands with masks on.

Prediction: Man City 3-1 Lyon

As García rightly points out, the first two quarter-finals have shown that the underdogs have nothing to fear with only 90 minutes standing between them and a place in the Champions League semi-finals. Lyon have caused City problems in the recent past but with so many attacking options at Guardiola’s disposal and the confidence from their victory over Real Madrid, City will expect to make it through to the final four.

One defeat in 17 games

Man City have only lost one game out of their last 17 Champions League games, against Tottenham last season.

Whoever wins tonight's match will head into a semi-final against rather scary Bayern Munich, who popped no less than eight goals past Barcelona last night. That match will be played on Wednesday, 19 August

The other semi-final will be contested between Leipzig and PSG, on Tuesday 18 August.

Manchester City vs Lyon

Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of Manchester City vs Lyon, the last of the Champions League quarter-finals, live from Lisbon.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, these quarter-finals are one-legged affairs, all being played in Lisbon, Portugal.

It's been a fair old set of matches so far, with PSG coming back right at the death to break Atalanta's hearts, Leipzig scoring late on to take the wind out of Atleti's sail just when Simeone's side thought they were on the up, and Bayern doing something pretty gruesome to Barcelona last night.

Tonight it's Pep vs Rudi. City are firm favourites but Lyon knocked out Juve, so it's not an entirely one-sided affair. Kick-off is at 21:00.
