RNC 2020 live online GOP from Charlotte: Republican delegates nominates Trump for reelection
Republican convention Day 1: 24 August 2020
Trump says a few early words
The president took to the stage to speak to those in attendance. In his own inimitable way he referenced the "plague from China" being the only thing getting in the way of the best economy in the history of the world ever.
He was also keen to point out the importance of this election, "the most important in the country's history" stating that there are two hugely different paths on offer to Americans.
Today's theme: "Land of Promise"
Speakers: A maximum of 336 delegates will meet in the morning from 09:00 to 13:00 (ET) before conducting a night-time roll call in which Trump and Pence will officially be nominated.
The Great American Story
The theme of the nominating convention will be "Honouring the Great American Story", and will culminate in a live acceptance speech from Trump on Thursday night on the South Lawn of the White House.
The White House grounds will also be used on Tuesday night, when First Lady Melania Trump and Trump's adult children will speak from the Rose Garden.
Trump arrives
US President Donald Trump arrived at the site of the Republican convention in North Carolina on Monday, ending speculation about whether he would make a surprise appearance.
Our understanding is that the current Oval Office incumbent will make his voice heard every night of the convention. There should be around 300 guests in attendance to listen to what he has to say.
Virtual reelection plan
Beginning today, Monday 24 August, the Republican party event is set to run for four days.
As per the Democratic version, this event is being scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic with many virtual speeches and events forming part of the convention experience instead of the huge attendances.
