América and Toluca share the spoils in matchday 10

Club América were looking for their fourth win in a row when they hosted Toluca at the Azteca stadium for matchday 10 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament. Chepo de la Torre was the assistant coach for América back in 2001, so he knew about the difficulty of playing in that historic place.

From the beginning Toluca’s intentions were clear and they were playing defensively with only three shots on target the entire game. Club América had the majority of the possession with 70% and six shots on target but couldn’t make this domination count.

Early goal from América

The home team went full offense from the beginning and in the 19th minute Federico Viñas scored the first goal of the game. Their happiness wouldn’t last long, because Brandon Godoy scored the equaliser ten minutes after.

After 45 minutes both teams returned to their locker room with the scores even and it didn’t look like this was going to change. The second half started how the first one ended, with América trying to pass by Toluca’s defense but being unable to do it for the remainder of the second half.

Bad news for América

During the second half América’s top striker Viñas had to be subbed off, because he suffered an injury that didn’t let him continue the game. What worries América’s coach Miguel Herrera is that next week they face Chivas in a new edition of El Clásico Nacional.
