Sergio Reguilón’s move to Tottenham is a done deal, which could be made official as soon as Thursday.

Spurs will pay €30 million plus €5 million in variables for the Spanish full back, who will be committed to the club until 2025. The deal will include a clause in which Real Madrid will have the option to buy him back for two seasons for 40 million euros, in addition to the right of first refusal should Tottenham look to sell him in the future.

Manchester United and Inter Milan, who were also keen on signing Reguilón, were not willing to accept these clauses, which is why Spurs have won the right to sign the 23-year-old defender.

Reguilón takes the next step

Several figures were involved in the deal. Kia Joorabchian, who became his agent this summer, and Borja Couce, his trusted confidante, were instrumental in getting the player very attractive conditions. Also of note is Spurs coach Jose Mourinho, who, like club chairman Daniel Levy, was involved directly in the conversations to seduce the highly sought-after defender.

Reguilón is set to take another major step in his career after having come to the fore in 2018-19, during which he played 22 games and provided 3 assists for Madrid, where he played back up to Marcelo.

But Zidane’s return, followed by the signing of Ferland Mendy in July, 2019, prompted his loan move to Sevilla last summer, where he was reunited with Julen Lopetegui.

With 38 appearances for Sevilla last season, he played an important role in the club securing Champions qualification and a historic sixth Europa League title. His next task will be to help Spurs secure a top-four spot in the Premier League after a poor season in 2019/20.
