Extra $300 unemployment benefits in New York: how to check if I am eligible?

The state of New York has approved the $300 weekly unemployment benefits for another three weeks under President Trump’s executive order, signed last month.

Last month President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders that included an extension of unemployment benefits to help people struggling with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Congress has so far failed to reach an agreement on a stimulus relief package. leading to Trump taking the action. The good news for those unemployed in New York is that they will continue to receive a weekly boost in their unemployment benefits, at least for a time.

People who qualify will receive an additional three weeks of $300 a week in unemployment benefits. This means that eligible New Yorkers will have a total of six-weeks of aid for the weeks ending 2 August to 6 September.

People will receive the money next week

This Friday, the State Department of Labor said that people in New York had received the approval of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an extra three weeks. Prior to this announcement, New Yorkers had already received the extra $300 a week for the weeks ending 2 August, 9 August and 16 August.

Roughly 2 million New Yorkers are already pre-qualified and will automatically receive the payment if they indicated that they are unemployed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these individuals will already have received an email alert regarding their status.

Roughly 435,000 people will need provide additional information to claim unemployment benefits

People need to open and complete a secure DocuSign email from the labor department that should arrive Friday with a link to certify for benefits. They can also call the department (833-491-0632) before Tuesday to make sure the money arrives as soon as next week.

The labor department from New York has paid $44.5 billion in unemployment benefits during the coronavirus pandemic. According to the department the total amount of money that has been paid in these six months is the equivalent to 21 years' worth of benefits under normal circumstances.
