REAL SOCIEDAD 0 - 0 REAL MADRID

Real Madrid player ratings from 0-0 draw away to Real Sociedad

Varane showed he was over his disaster against Manchester City in Madrid's goalless draw with Real Sociedad. Decent from Vinicius and Benzema, but not quite enough.

MadridUpdate:

A somewhat toothless Real Madrid had a pretty decent first half before struggling in the second in their goalless draw away to Real Sociedad. The most pressing issue for Zidane remains their difficulty in creating real chances.

Courtois

Could have watched most of the first half on the TV, but was called into action just before the break, flapping badly at a long corner Le Normand failed to make the most of, before making a superb save with an outstretched foot to an Isak shot. No major incidents in the second half, but the big Belgian was solid throughout. 7/10

Carvajal

Had his work cut out to keep tabs on Barrenetxea who ran his socks off, meaning the Real Madrid man had limited opportunities to attack. Even so he made several appearances up front, but failed to produce a killer cross. Had one long range effort in the second half, with more power than accuracy. 6/10

Varane

His main job was dealing with Isak - a fast, tricky player - and performed the job excellently. This was always going to be a tough match for Varane, his first competitive match since his double error against City, but he was in fine fettle. Dominated his area and made a vital block with his, er, vitals at the death to deny Silva. 8/10

Ramos

Solid in stopping the runs from Oyarzabal, Isak and Portu and posed a threat in attack when he went up the pitch. Had one of Madrid's best chances - a volley that hit a defender on the deck when it looked goal-bound. 7/10

Mendy

Highly involved up front and good coverage at the back, although Portu occasionally got in behind him - forcing Mendy into a yellow-card-earning challenge fairly early on. 6/10

Modric

Who would guess he's 35? Had a sparklingly creative first 45, leaving rivals behind with his trademark twists and turns. He made way for Valverde after 69 minutes. 7/10

Kroos

He's notably slower than Modric now, and was forced into taking risks at times, although he still knows how to protect the ball and force the foul. He tries two shots from distance, the first a curled effort with the right was saved by Remiro, the next a left-footed strike from the top of the box over the bar. 5/10

Odegaard

A return to the Real Madrid set up and a return to San Sebastián... Odegaard must have been hoping for a glorious night. Alas he ended up playing more of a supporting role, asked by Zidane to help the high press and having little chance to shine, although he did give a couple of superb touches that will leave the Real Madrid fans salivating. Went off after 69 minutes for Casemiro. 6/10

Rodrygo

Had little impact, looking rather timid in most of the moves he was involved in, and lacking physically. He worked hard on the defensive side of things though. He went off after 69 minutes for Marvin. 4/10

Benzema

Constantly popped up across the pitch, looking to add oil to the slightly creaky Madrid attacking machine, and also in the danger zone, although he failed to make the most of his chances. His best came at the end of the first half, going round Remiro only to slide the ball across the face of the goal and then slipping as he went to pop one in the top corner. In the second half great cover from Elustondo took a good chance off his boots and a decent effort forced a good save from Remiro. 7/10

Vinicius

Madrid's best up front in the opening minutes, with dangerous, fast runs that left the Real Sociedad defence in something of a panic, but the rest of the team didn't back him up. Tiredness caught up with him in the second half, where he struggled to produce the same inventiveness. Even so, laid off a fine ball to Marvin, who should have done better. 7.5/10

Casmeiro

A surprise as a substitute, although Madrid coped without him in the first half. He took Odegaard's place after 69 minutes and added a touch of solidity to the base of midfield. 6/10

Valverde

Came on for Modric after 69 minutes. Plenty of running but did little with the ball. 5/10

Marvin

Debut for the Real Madrid Castilla player, who recently won the Youth League under Raúl. Had the chance to start with a goal after a good pass from Vinicius but he made a mess of it and failed to do much after that. 5/10

Arribas

Came on after 91 minutes for a knackered Vinicius. Not much time, but he's made his debut...
