Current champions and group A clear favourites Bayern will look to keep the amazing level they showed during the 2019/2020 Champions League against one of the title contenders in Atlético Madrid.

The German outfit will need to improve their defence, after conceding 11 goals across their last half-a-dozen matches, including their only but surprising 4-1 defeat in the domestic league at the hands of Hoffenheim last month.

The attention in the attack will be focused on Polish star Robert Lewandowski, who is in tremendous shape. His numbers don’t lie: seven goals and three assists in just 300 minutes this season. Together with Germany international Thomas Muller, they ensured a comfortable win for Bayern over Arminia Bielefeld.

Winger Leroy Sane, the summer's marquee signing, won’t be available for the game, alongside centre-back Tanguy Nianzou and defender Chris Richards. What's more, just 24 hours before the game the Bavarian club announced that striker Serge Gnabry tested positive for coronavirus after Tuesday training session, so he won’t be playing in the match. To make matters worse, his covid-19 infection may have involved contact with coaches and other staff, which could lead to FIFA cancelling the match, though that seems unlikely at the time of writing.

Atlético look to improve on league form

Meanwhile, Atlético haven't had the best start in la Liga, dropping points to Huesca and Villarreal respectively. However, the Colchoneros beat Celta Vigo 0-2 on Saturday.

Diego Simeone will be unable to call upon the services of Croatian right-back Sime Vrsaljko, out with an injury. The other players that didn’t travel to Munich are Saúl Ñíguez, José María Giménez and Diego Costa.

Taking into account Simeone’s defensive mindset, Marcos Llorente could get the nod over Ángel Correa while Joao Felix is expected to partner Luis Suárez in attack.
