PSG set to make offer for Sergio Ramos
PSG will offer Ramos a three-year deal and €20 million net per season. Real Madrid only want to extend the club captain's current deal by one year.
The future of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid is up in the air and it appears to be increasingly difficult for Los Blancos and the club captain to reach an agreement on a new deal. Ramos' current contract expires on June 30 and as of January 1 he will be able to negotiate freely with other clubs. But the desire shared by head coach Zinedine Zidane and the Madrid fans themselves demonstrates that a renewal is the common objective for club stakeholders.
The problem is, according to sources close to the player, that Madrid are not willing to offer him more than one year after his current deal expires in 2021. Madrid's over 30 policy only offers new one-year deals to players over the age of 30, however, an exception was made in Cristiano Ronaldo's last contract renewal, signed when the Portuguese striker was 31, and extending his contract at the time for three more seasons. However, several Madrid players of the past left the club as a result of this - in 2017 Pepe did not renew and ended up going to Porto.
The club is willing to offer Ramos a 1+1 year deal, but logically that second year is subject to a series of variables that would be in major doubt if he suffered an injury for example, which is what happened to Víctor Valdés in his last year at Barça when he had already agreed to a lucrative deal with AS Monaco - the French club was going to pay him €10 million net annually - but everything broke down because of an injury the goalkeeper picked up.
Ramos has made it clear to the club, although he has not yet sat down face to face with Florentino Pérez, that his wish is to continue at Madrid and retire in the Spanish capital. Because of his age (34) and because of the loyalty and commitment shown over 16 seasons at the Bernabéu, he believes that he deserves at least two more years, that way he would continue until 2023 and therefore would get to play in the new Santiago Bernabéu, which is expected to be ready in the summer of 2022.
In Europe, Ramos is currently considered as one of the best central defenders. France Football has asked who is the best centre-back of all-time and the Spaniard will contest the honorary title with Beckenbauer and Baresi, being the favourite to be chosen. AS understand that PSG are willing to offer him a three-year contract worth €20 million net per season. The French club will not formalise a proposal until January 1, 2021 to avoid falling into any illegality. Ramos has told Madrid that if they give him two years on what he earns now (€12 million net per year) he would sign in order to continue at Real Madrid.
In Madrid's club offices, they currently see the situation with the captain closer to leaving than to staying, although these negotiations can undergo unexpected turns, eventually leading to a happy ending. It is quite difficult to imagine Real Madrid without Sergio Ramos, and fans of the club are hopeful he will renew.
It is not fully understood why the club have not already tied the captain of Madrid and Spain down for two more years. If he does leave, club president Florentino Pérez will have to find a replacement and surely the successor, there is much talk about David Alaba of Bayern Munich, would cost him almost the same as Ramos. On Monday, Florentino will speak to Spanish radio program El Larguero and explain how the situation is. Hours before, Ramos will speak in a press conference in his hometown Seville, ahead of Spain's match with Germany in the Nations League on Tuesday, to explain his feelings, although the captain tends to prioritise the national team when on duty. It is difficult to imagine Ramos speaking about his Real Madrid future on the eve of a key match for his country.
