Like last month’s friendlies against Cameroon and Ivory Coast, Moriyasu has only called Japanese players who are already based in Europe due to the travel restrictions in place during the pandemic. Japan top Group F in their 2022 World Cup qualifying section with a flawless four wins from four with 13 goals for and none conceded.
Gerardo 'Tata’ Martino’s Mexico have also been keeping themselves busy during the last two international breaks and like Japan, they too are unbeaten in their most recent outings. The Tri beat Guatamala and the Netherlands last month, were held to a 2-2 draw by Algeria last week then beat South Korea at Stadion Wiener Neustadt at the weekend.
This will be the seventh meeting between these two nations in just over five decades – in the previous six, Mexico have won four and Japan two – the bronze medal match at the 68 Olympics and in the Kirin Japan Cup back in 1996.
Mexico confirmed on the eve of the game that midfielder Héctor Herrera will miss the game after suffering an injury to his left hamstring.
