The FIFA president visited the Lusail Stadium, host venue for the World Cup final, and expressed his belief that the tournament will be a resounding success.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino visited the Lusail Stadium, one of the Qatar World Cup 2022 host venues, accompanied by members of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the organizational body responsible for all projects connected to the tournament.
During Infantino’s tour, the FIFA chief cast an eye over the ongoing construction work at the Lusail Stadium where the SC and other stakeholders involved in bringing the World Cup to fruition are working to ensure the venue is ready by the end of the year, when it will become the last of the eight host stadiums to be inaugurated ahead of the competition.
Lusail is the largest of the World Cup host stadiums with a capacity 80,000 spectators. It is scheduled to stage group games and knock-out round fixtures as well as being the arena chosen for the World Cup final on 18 December, 2022.
Infantino excited by Qatar 2022
The FIFA president also praised the efforts and steps being taken by the Qatari government to put on a memorable World Cup, which will be the first to be hosted in the Middle East. Infantino said he believed the Qatar World Cup will be the best tournament in the history of the competition in terms of organization and mass attendance, as well as noting that it will be the first country to complete preparations for the tournament two years ahead of kick-off.
Infantino added that he was confident supporters would be able to attend the 2022 World Cup as long as a vaccine for covid-19 has been successfully rolled out, leaving no obstacles to the participation of fans from all over the world at the tournament.
The FIFA chief’s visit to the Lusail Stadium took place 24 hours after his meeting with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, during which the progress of projects being carried out ahead of the World Cup were discussed.
