Al-Ahly set for African Super Cup and Club World Cup after CAF CL win
African giants Al-Ahly won their ninth African champions league title after a difficult win over historic rival Zamalek in Cairo to secure their berth at the Club World Cup in Qatar.
Egyptian giants Al-Ahly wrote history by snatching a difficult 2-1 victory over the city rival Zamalek in the African Champions League final. The 'Red Devils' claimed their ninth title to widen the gap with African clubs as the club with the most wins and secure a berth in the Club World Cup that will be held in Qatar next February.
Al-Ahly will also now face Moroccan outfit RS Berkane, who previously won the title of the Confederation Cup over Pyramids FC of Egypt, in the "Total" Super Cup final that will be held in Cairo next month.
Al-Ahly end a seven-year drought:
Al-Ahly succeeded today to end a drought that lasted for 7 years since the Red Devils won their last title in 2013 when they defeated South African Orlando Pirates in the final game. Al-Ahly then failed on two occasions to attain their ninth title when they lost two consecutive finals in 2017 and 2018 to Wydad Casablanca and Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
On the other side, Zamalek whose last coronation was in 2002 are still looking for the sixth title they failed to earn when they lost 2016 final against Mamelodi Sundowns whose coach back then was current Ahly's current coach Pitso Mosimane.
Al-Ahly now have a record nine titles that were claimed in the years; 1982, 1987, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013, and 2020 with Zamalek and Mazembe sharing the second place with five titles each.
Al-Ahly is the fourth participant in the club World Cup:
Al-Ahly became the fourth club to book a ticket to the club World Cup in Qatar between 1 and 11 February next year Al-Duhail will be Qatar's representative in the tournament, Auckland City, and Bayern Munich. The three teams representing Asia, South America, and Concacaf are to be decided within the next two months.
Al-Ahly are set to take part in the Club World Cup for the sixth time in their history with their best achievement was winning third place in 2006 after defeating Mexican Club America 2-1 with two goals from club legend Mohamed Aboutrika.
