Court of Arbitrary for Sport (CAS) has ruled that Ahmad Ahmad restores his position as the president of Confederation of African Football (CAF) after he had earlier received a five-year ban from FIFA for alleged breaching of the international governing body code of ethics and was then stripped off his duties and subsequently deprived of taking part in CAF presidency elections.

The Malagasy later appealed FIFA's ban at CAS who issued a preliminary ruling giving Ahmad his position back. However, he is still ineligible to run for another term of CAF presidency in March since the Cas decision came after both the Caf's Governance Committee and Fifa's Review Committee met earlier this week to discuss the eligibility of candidates.

CAS is set to hear Ahmad's appeal in early March so that a ruling in relation to his eligibility for running can be issued ahead of the elections day on 12 March since his appeal at CAS was only against FIFA's ban.

Moreover, FIFA's ban will remain in place until CAS issues a final award as declared in a statement by the Switzerland-based court "Due to a risk of irreparable harm for Mr. Ahmad if the disciplinary sanction is maintained during the period prior to the Caf elections, the Cas panel has upheld the request to temporarily stay the effects of the [Fifa ban]," CAS, sport's highest legal body, said in its statement.
