Super Bowl LV halftime show: who's playing?

This year, Canadian singer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, will be performing in the Super Bowl’s halftime show, following in the footsteps of a whole host of legendary acts.

Among the major names to have played at the showpiece NFL occasion throughout the years are Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, the Black Eyed Peas and Madonna and many, many more.

An artist known for his boundary-pushing performances, The Weeknd has said his Super Bowl show will be the next installment of the narrative arc his music has been following, but will be more family-friendly this time. "I definitely want to be respectful to the viewer at home," he told a news conference.

"I will still incorporate some of the storyline. It’s a very cohesive story I am telling throughout this era and throughout this year so the story will continue but definitely will keep it PG for the families."

The 30-year-old, who has spent $7m of his own money to "make this halftime show be what he envisioned”, his manager Wassim ‘Sal’ Slaiby has told Billboard, won't be performing on the kind of on-field stage typical of previous Super Bowls. Instead, he'll be taking his show into the stands at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium.

“Due to the covid and for the safety of the players and the workers we kind of built a stage within the stadium,” he said. “We’re also using the field as well, but we wanted to kind of do something that we’ve never done before.”
