Tom Brady Super Bowl LV 2021 MVP
At 43 Tom Brady shows that he still has it in him to win bringing home his seventh Super Bowl win and his fifth MVP cementing himself in NFL history.
The 21-year NFL veteran quarterback showed that he can win and win big in leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory in Super Bowl LV. The Buccaneers won the Big Game 31-9, beating a foul-plagued Kansas City Chiefs. Tom Brady completed 3 touchdown passes, throwing for 201 yards with a completion percentage of 72.4%.
“We all knew this was going to happen, didn’t we?”
With his children by his side Tom Brady accepted the Vince Lombardi Trophy giving his kids each a chance to hold it before they gave it back to him. Asked by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell if this time was better Brady responded “I’m not making any comparisons. Every year is amazing” And to whether we can expect to see him playing in a Super Bowl again “We're coming back,” Brady said.
NFL history is made
Brady had already made history in previous Super Bowls but tonight he set the bar higher. He broke a tie with Joe Montana for the most Super Bowl MVP awards in NFL history when he earned his fourth following Super Bowl LI in 2017. That time at 39 years of age Brady became the oldest player to ever win a Super Bowl MVP award, also known as the Pete Rozelle Trophy, now at 43 with his fifth, he has broken his own record.
He brought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out to an early lead over the Kansas City Chiefs with a first quarter touchdown. With 37 seconds left in the first quarter he completed an 8-yard pass to Rob Gronkowski and the Buccaneers went up 7-3 over the Chiefs. It was also his first touchdown pass in an opening quarter of a Super Bowl having failed to do so the previous nine times to the Big Game.
That touchdown was the 13th postseason touchdown pass between Brady and Gronkowski setting a new NFL postseason record. The 49er Hall of Fame duo Joe Montana and Jerry Rice held the record previously of 12 postseason touchdowns.
Brady connects two more times
The Bucs kept up the pace and midway through the second quarter Brady found Gronkowski again, this time hitting him with a 17-yard pass putting Tampa Bay up 14-3. That touchdown let Gronkowski join Jerry Rice in another accomplishment, being the only two players to have a multi-touchdown Super Bowl game.
Before the first half was out Brady made a one-yard pass to Antonio Brown to give the Bucs their third touchdown and a 15-point halftime lead.
In the third quarter Tampa Bay went 74 yards in six plays at the end of which Brady gave the ball to Fournette who ran the ball 27 yards to the end zone. The Bucs led the Chiefs 28-9 before Mahomes threw an interception. That set up a final field goal in the third quarter extending the Buccaneers lead to 31-9.
