Real Madrid's Gareth Bale has spoken about his plan to return to the Spanish capital to see out the final year of his contract, and given apparent reasons for his decision to go out on loan to Tottenham Hotspur.

“There’s no distraction for me,” Bale said during a press conference ahead of the Wales national team's 2022 World Cup qualifier in Belgium.

“I think the main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost.

Going into the Euros I wanted to be match-fit. The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid.

“My plan is to go back, that’s as far I have planned.”

Much of the talk in Madrid has been about using funds raised from the transfer of Bale, as well as the complete removal of his wages, to bring in a new galáctico, with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland at the top of that list.

No doubt this story will rumble on well into the summer, with the player's agent, Jonathan Barnett, trying to pull the appropriate strings to get the most out of the situation.
