Bayern 2-3 PSG: result, goals, summary

Full time: Bayern 2 - 3 PSG | Champions League quarter-final first leg live

Bayern 2-3 PSG: match report

The hosts had 31 shots to PSG's seven, yet somehow it was the Ligue 1 champions who came away with the win...and three away goals.

Bayern had the bulk of the play and were positive in their play throughout, but came up against a hard-working backline and an inspired Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican stopper made 10 saves, which hasn't been bettered in a quarter-final game since 2003/04.

Mbappé steals the show

Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappé scored twice to steer the visitors to a 3-2 victory over holders Bayern Munich in a topsy-turvy Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.

Mbappé fired in his eighth goal of the competition in the 68th minute after Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting in the 37th minute and Thomas Müller on the hour had cancelled out a two-goal PSG lead. It was Bayern's first Champions League loss in more than two years.

PSG had stunned the hosts in the third minute through Mbappé, whose powerful low drive squeezed through the legs of keeper Manuel Neuer.

The French side were brutally efficient and scored with their second chance of the game when Neymar picked out Marquinhos with a pinpoint cross and the PSG captain beat Neuer in the 28th minute.

Choupo-Moting had headed onto the crossbar in the second minute but did better with another header in the 38th and Mueller brought the hosts level, nodding in a Joshua Kimmich free kick.

Mbappé scored from a quick counter-attack, however, and PSG survived late pressure from Bayern to hang on for victory ahead of next week's return leg in Paris.

It's all to play for and another dominant performance from Bayern is unlikely to go as unrewarded as tonight.

FULL-TIME

Goals: Choupo-Moting (37'), Müller (60'); Mbappé (3', 68'), Marquinhos (28')

90+3

Peep, peep, peeeeep!!!

That's it, no more time allowed and what a result we have.

90+1

Mbappé gets a chance to stretch his legs down the left, exactly where Pochettino would want the ball to be, and almost creates a chance.

Bayern win it back and have time for one last attack...

90

Rafinha is on for Neymar...and there'll be two added minutes.

89

Choupo-Moting didn't 'get on with it' and is cautioned for moaning.

89

"Penalty!" scream most of the home players, after Müller's low cross appears to touch Dagba's arm as he slide blocks.

The ref is not having any of that and urges the players to get on with the corner that they've won instead.

87

Bayern push again and it's Müller who fires goalwards, this time just outside Navas' other post. Time is running out for an equaliser.

86

CLOSE!! So, so close!

Alaba places a low effort through a crowded area and Navas is scrambling across to stop it before watching it slide just outside his right-hand post.

86

Draxler goes for one from distance but it's high and wide. Desperation possibly kicking in.

STAT: Mbappé has made history tonight, becoming the first player in UCL history to score five goals away from home across the Last 16 and quarter-finals.

And there is still time for more. Stat courtesy of MisterChip.

81

The Germans are straight up the other end and Pavard delivers a cross from the right. It's just too high for the attackers that join in the play and PSG come away with it.

This is going to be a hectic 10 minutes.

80

A foul by Alaba on Mbappé gives PSG more time to waste time (if that makes sense).

Neymar takes a few steps back, a couple of deep breaths and curls a ball into the penalty area. It's not one of his best and cleared away easily.

77

Choupo-Moting is found all alone in front of Navas. He controls and shoots but the keeper blocks well.

No matter, as the flag goes up late.

75

Two corners back to back (I make that 13 so far!!!) allow Bayern to push more players forward. Nothing doing though.

The hosts' frustration on how this is panning out is visible.

74

Jinking play on the right of goal by Sane almost leaves two defenders on the ground. When the German finally plays the ball across it's blocked for a corner.

72

Ouch! Boateng flies in on a crunching challenge through Neymar.

PSG clear the ball out of play to allow some attention to their Brazilian but the pass he released just before going down was promising.

71

Pochettino wants fresh legs and puts Moise Kean on for Di Maria.

70

Kimmich is the latest to have his name taken by the ref.

68

GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Mbappé has PSG back in front.

Out of nothing, this incredible player scores his eighth in eight. Just as it looked as though he was going to try a curler to the far post, he fires into the near one. Class.

66

Müller in the wars. His head is bleeding but he trots off to get seen to quickly and is back on in no time. Likely just a cut rather than anything too serious.

63

There's a bicycle on the pitch!! Oh no, wait. That's just Müller going for a spectacular overhead kick.

No damage done to the PSG goal.

62

Draxler into the book after a rather firm challenge.

60

GOOOOAAAAAALLLL!! Müller levels things up.

Kimmich swings one of those passes across the six-yard box and, unchallenged, the German rises and glances past a diving Navas.

60

A free-kick wide on the right will give Kimmich his hundreth chance to deliver. The penalty box is primed...

59

Mbappé appears to be away and clear, sprinting onto a pass from just inside the Bayern half as the backline pushes up high.

Neuer wins the duel but the flag is then raised.

58

More opportunities open up for Bayern as they get down the channels and dink balls into the area. PSG holding on, as first Coman then Sane go close.

54

DOUBLE SAVE!! Navas staying busy.

First it's Alaba that has a go but the former Madrid stopper punches away really well.

The ball is then recycled quickly by the hosts and Pavard is found in space inside the area. Controlled on his chest beautifully, he strikes low...but Keylor is down sharply and holds at the second attempt.

52

CHANCE!! Mbappé collects on the left touchline and draws with him two and a half watchful, and concerned defenders.

As they focus on his dancing feet, he fires a hard pass to the edge of the area and some forceful play ends with Neymar one-on-one with Neuer. The keeper comes out on top and Di Maria's follow-up is blocked.

50

Müller is next to cause some problems for the Ligue 1 defence.

The German almost finds a gap to get a shot away but is smothered out by white shirts and PSG clear.

47

Coman picks the ball up on the left side of the PSG area and shapes to shoot.

Just before pulling the trigger though, he spots a teammate coming down the right and chooses to pick him out...but the pass is overhit and out for a goal kick.

46

Bayern get the first attack away but Navas is unbothered as he collects and then takes as long as possible in releasing. Letting the second tick by may become a common tactic.

We're back underway...

Pochettino puts on Mitchel Bakker in place of Diallo.

Before the second half begins, some changes coming...

OK, the players have had their orange quarters or equivalent other refreshment and some guidance from their coaching team.

Time to get this first leg back on...

2

Neymar-Mbappé: hot in the cold

Bayern 1-2 PSG: half-time musings

What a frenetic first half that was. The hosts had most of the play - but their guests seemed fairly fine with that as they turned their 27% possession into two goals.

Those goals from Mbappé and Marquinhos, both excellently created, were the only two efforts from PSG while the Bundesliga side had 15 attempts, of which six were on target.

Whether or not Pochettino planned to be so much under the cosh we may never know, but they've ridden their luck at the back (along with plenty hard graft) and been clinical at the other end.

Flick has already made a couple of tactical changes to personnel, but it will be interesting to see how much they really go for it in the second half. The threat of Neymar and, more so, Mbappé on the break is frightening.

Marquinhos makes his mark

The Brazilian defender scored his side's second away goal before immediately being substituted for an injury.

45+3

Peeeeep!! A loud whistle from our Spanish official brings an intriguing first half to an end.

45+2

Müller gets his head to yet another Kimmich corner and directs it on target, but it's never going to beat Navas who catches comfortably.

45

We'll be having two minutes of added time - seems about right given the injury to Marquinhos and a couple of subs. Could maybe have been more.

44

The corner is thrown into the packed space in front of Navas but it's the white shirts that deal with it.

43

CLOSE!! Kimmich with one of those 'undefendable' free-kicks, which is actually, well, 'defended'.

Corner to Bayern.

42

Boateng on for Sule...that's Flick's second change of the half as he identifies how to flip this.

38

The Bayern players waste little time celebrating that goal and get the ball back to the centre spot ASAP. German efficiency in practice.

37

GOOOOAAAAAAALLLL!!! Choupo-Moting gets one back for the hosts.

Lovely ball into the box from Pavard and the Cameroon striker drills a firm header past Navas. Can't say they didn't deserve it.

37

PSG go direct again and Neuer decides to race well out of his penalty area to help out his defence. He does so well but there was a moment of panic.

35

Lucas Hernandez first into the book. No complaints

33

Bayern making a change. Goretzka off, Alphonso Davies on.

32

Bayern are in a tricky position here.

They clearly need to attack, but they've been doing that for most of the first half hour. Neymar the latest to cause them an issue at the back but he loses control under pressure.

This is fascinating.

30

No is the answer. The Brazilian heads off to be replaced by Herrera

20

Marquinhos is hurt. Let's see if he can continue after a little attention...

28

GOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!! Unbelievable! Marquinhos doubles the lead.

Di Maria goes short with the corner and when the ball is played into the busy area it's headed away powerfully. Neymar picks it up not far inside the Bayern half and picks out Marquinhos as several others are heading away from goal.

A perfect touch kills the pass and then he slots it home.

28

A rare chance for PSG to spend time nearer Neuer.

It starts with a long pass to the lonely Mbappé to chase. He does so brilliantly and skips passed the defender with ease. Corner won.

27

More tidy build-up play from the Germans leads to a corner.

Kimmich's ball in goes deep to the back post and Choupo-Moting almost manages to reach it with an outstretched foot.

24

Bayern are in full control of the play at the moment* and Sane gets wide on the right to whip and inswinger into the area. It's just overhit and can't be kept in.

*PSG won't mind as they are a serious threat on the rare break they have.

21

Back-to-back Kimmich corners dealt with by the Parisien defence.

20

SAVE! Navas called into action once again as Pavard tries his luck from the right side of goal.

The Costa Rican keeper will certainly not be feeling the cold given how busy he's been.

19

CHANCE!! Bayern again should have scored.

This time it's Goretzka in front of goal and directs the free kick goalwards with a good header. Navas is up to the test though.

16

Some pressure from the Bundesliga champs, including a corner, is dealt with well by the visitors before Neymar gets a chance to swing a dead ball into the danger area after Goretzka fouls.

The Brazilian's delivery from wide is good but a strong defensive header clears.

It's all action here...

13

Goooaa....no! Draxler with a fine finish inside the area after a rapid break from Mbappé.

The offside flag goes up though as the Frenchman  was ahead of the last defender as the penultimate pass reached him. Good call from the assistant.

11

Hernández brings down Di Maria and the whistle rightly goes. Already a few interesting aspects to this game forming.

9

CHANCE!! And what an amazing opportunity that appeared to be for Müller.

Sané initially created the danger down the left as red shirts piled into the PSG area. After a couple of blocked attempts, the ball drops over the backline and the reliable forward just has to guide the volley home.

Maybe 'home' in German means 'Keylor', as that is exactly where he caressed it to.

7

Two players jump over the ball before Kimmich tries a curler but the wall does its job.

Alaba tries to strike the rebound goalwards but it flies high into the snow-filled sky.

6

That goal will surely fire up the holders and they have quickly created a great chance to level up, winning a free-kick just outside the area, and central, from a Gueye handball...

3

GOOOAAAAAL!!! Mbappé puts the visitors ahead.

Straight from that last Bayern threat PSG break and the young star is in loads of space just to the right of goal.

He goes hard and low and Neuer is unable to stop it finding its way through.

2

CHANCE! The hosts do well with their first period of possession and a smart shot from Hernández calls for a save from Navas.

The corner is then headed onto the bar.

1

PSG get us underway, playing from left to right as we watch, and in their all white kit, with red/white trim.

Some early touches around the back are quickly moved forward but Bayern win it back.

This quarter-final first leg is GO!

The Champiiiiiiiiooooooonnnss

OK. It's just about time.

The players are out, the famous anthem has been sung, the snow continues to fall...

Mateu in the middle

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz is the man with the whistle.

Bayern have previously played four matches under the supervision of the Spaniard with the most recent one being the 2019/2020 UCL semi-final against Olympique Lyonnais.

The Germans have lost only once out of the four times – unfortunately, it was the 3-0 defeat against PSG in the group stage back in 2017. The other two games were against Benfica (0-2) in 2018 and Viktoria Plzen (0-1) in 2013

Eyes on King Coman

Don't be surprised if you see the usual lame puns attributed to the Bayern man tonight - even on this feed - but he's certainly a player that could define this tie.

The former PSG man scored the winner in last year's UCL final, and has been Bayern’s first goalscorer with his last three Bundesliga strikes.

Can he destroy his opponents once again? Damn!

Warming up nicely

With around 10 minutes till kick off, the players have finished there pre-game workouts and are back in the dressing rooms getting (hopefully) some final advice on what they need to do.

Let's see who comes out of the traps quickest...

Kylian Mbappe: his Champions League stats and records

PSG star striker Mbappé has scored six goals in seven games in this season's competition, including four goals across the two legs with Barcelona last time out, making this his joint-best campaign alongside 2016-17.

This is Mbappé's fourth season competing in the Champions League with the Parisian side after his 2016/17 display in the competition with former side Monaco propelled the striker onto the global stage.

Pochettino say PSG not looking for revenge

...yeah we believe you!

"The final is not a benchmark match for us, we weren't there with my staff, we were just spectators," Pochettino told reporters ahead of Wednesday's first leg in Munich.

"In addition, it's going to be played over two matches, the context is different. Revenge exists in sport but for us it's more of a challenge to beat such a strong team, maybe the best in the world. It's a source of motivation."

Bayern-PSG stars to heat us up

It's a snowy night in Munich...

Mbappé-Neymar headline

Bayern boast some scary numbers for any opponent, but PSG will try to knock them out of the competition relying on the fact Kylian Mbappé is in fully fit and Neymar is back.

Pochettino’s side have the potential to beat any team in the tournament, as they proved in the previous round, when they thrashed Barcelona at Camp Nou (1-4) with an impressive Mbappé, scoring a hat trick.

They're more than happy for you to relive that experience...

No Lewandowski

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was always expected to take Lewandowski’s spot against PSG and duly does, filling arguably the biggest striking boots on the planet.

Coman, Müller and Sané have been given the supporting roles aound him in the attacking line, as Serge Gnabry misses out after testing positive for coronavirus.

Defenders Alphonso Davies and Jerome Boateng didn’t play against Leipzig due to suspension, and have not been chosen to feature from the start. Corentin Tolisso and Douglas Costa were not available for this match, both with tendon and ankle problems respectively.

Team news: PSG

Navas, Dagba, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Diallo, Gueye, Danilo, Di Maria, Neymar, Draxler, Mbappe

Team news: Bayern Munich

Neuer, Pavard, Süle, Alaba, Hernández, Kimmich, Goretzka, Sané, Müller, Coman, Choupo-Moting

So, with just over an hour till kick-off it looks as though we're going to have team news very shortly...

Mbappé magic working

"I've never said I was going to be the greatest player in history," the PSG man stated to UEFA, "but I've never put limits on myself.

"If I get to a certain level, I'm not going to stop myself by putting a barrier up, like: 'If I get there, then that's it, that's my maximum.' No, I try to push my boundaries and see where that takes me.

"For the moment, it's working well for me, and I'll keep doing that until the end of my career."

Check out the full interview below.

Forget last year's UCL final

Hansi Flick does not expect there to be any lasting effects of last season's Champions League final in either the Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain camps ahead of their quarter-final tie.

Former PSG winger Kingsley Coman grabbed the only goal in August's delayed final in Portugal to deny the Ligue 1 giants their first European crown. It was the only time in 43 Champions League games PSG have failed to score.

They will get their chance for revenge this year as Bayern again lie in their way in the last eight, the German, European and world champions hosting the sides' 10th meeting in the competition in Wednesday's first leg.

But Bayern coach Flick, still unbeaten in the Champions League and looking to extend his team's undefeated run to 20 matches, considers this a whole new challenge against Mauricio Pochettino's men.

Read what he had to say.

Masks, music and Munich were all that mattered yesterday...

Bayern ready to defend their crown

Winning the Champions League - or it's predecessor the European Cup - is hard enough, but retaining it is not something that is commonly seen (yes, we see you over there Madrid fans!)

The perrenial German champions are not having it all their own way domestically this season, but are still targeting title wins on both fronts again.

UCL quarter-final night

Of course, it's not only the game in Germany tonight. Chelsea and Porto meet in the other quarter-final...and they're playing in neutral Seville, due to covid-19 travel restrictions.
