Spain could draw Brazil or Argentina at Tokyo Olympics
FIFA have confirmed which teams will be in the four pots for the draw on 21 April. Spain, who are in Pot 2, are guaranteed to face one of the favourites .
FIFA have allocated the 16 Mens' teams who will be taking part in this summer's Tokyo Olympic Games into the four pots for the draw which will take place at 4am ET/1am PT (10:00 hours local time CEST) in Zurich on Wednesday 21 April. The teams have been positioned based on a ranking built according to their performances at the past five Olympic Games. The ranking is weighted so that recent performances play a more prominent role, and a bonus is given to those nations who finished their qualifying competition as continental champions.
Which teams could be in Spain's group at the Tokyo Olympics?
Spain has landed in Pot 2 alongside Germany, Honduras and Mexico. The bad news for La Rojita is that their rival from Pot 1, which includes hosts Japan, Brazil, Argentina and Korea Republic, has to be one of the South American teams. According to the criteria for the draw, two teams from the same confederation cannot be drawn together at the group stage - so Korea and Japan must be drawn in the same group as the two European teams in Pot 4 (Australia, Saudi Arabia, France and Romania). The Australians are in the Asian confederation, so the only way the groups can take shape is if Germany and Spain are in the same groups as either Argentina or Brazil. Spain's other possible group stage rivals will be either Australia or Saudi Arabia plus one of the teams from Pot 3 (Egypt, New Zealand, Ivory Coast or South Africa).
The Olympics will take place from 23 July to 8 August.
