Update:
The 92nd Academy Awards took place in February 2020 with an elaborate ceremony, where Parasite, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were the big winners.

The 2020 Oscars were the 92nd in the illustrious history of the Academy Awards and seem to have taken place in a different world to the one surrounding Sunday’s edition. Crowds were gathered in the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles as the great and the good rubbed shoulders on the red carpet.

Last year was notable for a variety of reasons with a non-English language film winning the Best Picture prize for the first time, while the hostless event was commended by many critics.

Organisers have confirmed that they will be sticking with the ensemble cast of hosts to guide viewers through the evening and are intent on making the occasion appear as close to normal as possible. Recipients will be there in person to pick up their prizes with Zoom acceptance speeches reportedly banned.

Who were the big winners from the 2020 Oscars?

The stand-out winner from last year’s edition was the South Korean comedy-thriller Parasite, which took home four awards in total. The first foreign film to win Best Picture also scooped Best Original Screenplay and International Feature Film. Parasite’s director, Bong Joon Ho, won Best Director.

The awards for Best Actor and Best Actress went to Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger respectively, with Brad Pitt and Laura Dern picking up the Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress gongs.

The saying goes that it is an honour just to be nominated for such a prestigious award, but Martin Scorsese may feel slightly peeved that The Irishman was overlooked in all ten of the categories it was nominated for. Instead it was Shaun Mendes’s 1917 that picked up the awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.
