Favourite to win Best Supporting Actor

The clear favourite to pick up the gong for Best Supporting Actor is Daniel Kaluuya for his portrayal of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, in Judas and the Black Messiah. Kaluuya plays a very central part of Shaka King’s historical drama but has been nominated as a supporting actor here.

Kaluuya was nominated for Best Actor for his role in 2017’s Get Out but looks to have a much better shot of winning the prize this year. He has won Best Supporting Actor at every single televised awards show this year (Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards and British Academy Film Awards) and looks like a dead-cert to pick up his first Oscar on Sunday.

Judas and the Black Messiah has actually provided two nominees for the Best Supporting Actor award with Kaluuya’s co-star, LaKeith Stanfield, also up for the award.

But despite Kaluuya’s dominance in previous awards shows there are other very worthy nominees this year. Sacha Baron Cohen stole the show in Aaron Sorkin’s critically acclaimed The Trial of the Chicago 7, bringing a comedic flourish to the movie. He too has received just one nomination before, for 2006’s Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Also in the running is Paul Ricci, who played Joe in Sound of Metal. The Amazon Studios original follows a punk-metal drummer who losing his hearing and is up for six awards at Sunday’s ceremony. Riz Ahmed is on the shortlist for Best Actor while the film itself is up for the prestigious Oscars Best Picture.
