MOTHER'S DAY 2021

Do florists deliver flowers on Mother’s Day? What are the most common flowers?

Mothering Sunday falls on the second Sunday of May but with the pandemic disruption ongoing, what is the best way to get flowers delivered this year?

Update:
Need some inspiration to write a card for the special mom in your life? We have you covered.

This year Mother Day falls on Sunday 9 May 2021, the day where sons and daughters traditionally pay thanks to their mums. The history of Mothering Sunday is a long one, and is believed to go back to the Greeks and the Romans who had special festivals to celebrate parents.

The first official celebration came in the United States more than 100 years ago, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed 9 May 1914 as the first Mother's Day. He told Americans that they should use that day to wish a special 'thank you' to all mothers.

With such an extensive history many traditions and customs have built up over the years and remain to this day. One of the most common is to send flowers but for the uninitiated it can be a minefield. Here’s what to know about florists on Mother’s Day.

Talking of flowers, here’s why people are giving yellow flowers in Mexico and Latin America on March 21.

Which flowers should I buy for Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, by which point there is usually a variety of locally grown flowers to pick from. At this time of year the likes of chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, lilies and tulips are all in season, and are fairly widely available across the country.

Traditionally, carnations or chrysanthemums are considered symbols of Mother’s Day but that does not mean you should be confined by the custom. Oriental lilies and tulips offer a wide range of colours, sizes and varieties, and offer a pleasing fragrance to fill any room.

Another slightly more left-field choice is a rose, which are available in a wider range of colours than simple the traditional ‘Valentine’s Day red’. Roses still bring a touch of exclusivity and decadence and a bunch of long-stemmed pink or yellow flowers could be just the thing.

Will florists deliver on Mother’s Day?

Concern over delivery times is an issue with any gift-buying and when the present is a perishable item the timeline is particularly important. Not only that, but when the big day comes on a Sunday it can be difficult to schedule to arrival correctly.

This year things are complicated further by the coronavirus pandemic with delivery services facing restrictions in some areas, and some florists unfortunately having to cut back on a delivery service entirely.
