Five Cruz Azul players to watch in the Liga MX final

Cruz Azul will face Santos Laguna in a two-legged final of the 2021 Guardianes tournament in the Liga MX. The team known as the Machine has been the best of the competition and now they want to conclude it by ending their almost 24-year championship drought and lifting the trophy.

Players to watch for Cruz Azul

Juan Reynoso took the managerial job for this tournament and he has brought out the best of each of his players. Cruz Azul finished in first place after seventeen match days and they only lost twice during the regular season. They won on aggregate their two playoff games to advance to the final thanks to the performance of five players that have been key for Reynoso.

Jesús Corona

The veteran goalkeeper has been in top form this tournament and in 15 regular season games, the 40-year-old only conceded 9 goals and kept 8 clean sheets. In the semi-final series against Puebla the former Mexican international had 4 saves to help his team advance to the next round. Corona joined Cruz Azul in 2009 and since then he has lost three finals, so he seeks revenge in this tournament against Santos Laguna.

Pablo Aguilar

The 34-year-old is a very experienced player that knows what it takes to win the Liga MX title. Aguilar won the 2012 Apertura tournament with Tijuana and the 2014 Apertura tournament with Club América. He has been in the league for 9 years and he wants to help Cruz Azul end their title drought in this tournament. He is the leader of the backline and helped his team become more solid on defense.

Luis Romo

The 25-year-old is the one of the best midfielders that Cruz Azul has and he was included in the Liga MX best XI of the 2020 Guardianes tournament. The Mexican international has made two goals and given five assists in the 13 regular season appearances this tournament.

Orbelín Pineda

The ‘Wizard’ plays an important role on attack for Cruz Azul. He has scored two goals and given two assists in 16 league appearances this tournament. Orbelín Pineda gives mobility in the midfield and is a dangerous threat when he has the ball.

Jonathan Rodríguez

Last but not least is the winner of the golden boot with 23 goals during the regular season of the 2021 Guardianes tournament. Rodríguez has been on top form this year and even though he has only scored one goal in the playoffs, he is a dangerous threat to opposing defenders.
