Where will the 2022 Champions League final be played?
The 2021/22 Champions League final was initially due to be played at Munich’s Allianz Arena but the venues for the next three editions have been shifted back a year.
With the 2020/21 Champions League having reached its conclusion in Porto this evening, thoughts will soon turn to the next edition of the tournament – the 67th since the inaugural edition in 1955. Next season’s Champions League will get underway on 8 June with the Preliminary Round with all of the qualifying stages to be completed by 25 August. The group stage will begin on 14-15 September and be concluded on 8-9 December with the Round of 16 draw taking place on the following Monday, 13 December.
2021/22 Champions League dates
The tournament will resume in the New Year with the Last 16 taking place between 15 February and 16 March 2022. The quarter finals and semi-finals will be played between April and the start of May. Next year’s final will be played at the Krestovsky Stadium, otherwise known as the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Saturday 28 May 2022. The final had originally been scheduled to be played at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany but because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the last two finals were moved to other cities and subsequently, all of the venues for the next three editions have been shifted forward a year.
2018 World Cup finals and Euro 2021
The Krestovsky Stadium is the brainchild of Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa and was inaugurated in April 2017. It was one of the 12 stadiums used during the 2018 World Cup. It hosted seven games at the Russia World Cup including the semi-final between France and Belgium and the match for third place between Belgium and England. The Krestovsky stadium will also stage matches at this summer’s Euro 2021, up to the quarter finals.
The 2022 Champions League final will be the second to be held in Russia, and the first time it will be staged in Saint Petersburg. Russia was elected to hold the 2008 final with the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow chosen as the venue. It witnessed a memorable final which, like this year’s, was an all-English affair – Manchester United edged Chelsea in the penalty shoot-out after it finished 1-1 after extra-time.
After Saint Petersburg, the following Champions League finals will be held in Munich (Allianz Arena 2023) and London (Wembley 2024).
