Copa América: 13 MLS players to take part in the tournament

The event has been moved to Brazil less than two weeks before it starts;13 players from MLS have been called to their respective national teams.

Copa América: 13 MLS players to take part in the tournament

During an emergency meeting on Monday morning, the South American Football Confederation announced that the Copa América has been moved to Brazil. The tournament is scheduled to start on 13 June with Argentina playing Chile in the inaugural match.

"Nothing is certain but I want to emphasize very clearly that we are in the middle of this process and we are not going to shirk at a request it might be possible to fulfill," explained Luiz Eduardo Ramos, Brazil's Minister of the Civil House, in a press conference on Monday afternoon.

MLS players to play in the Copa América

While the majority of the players called for the 2021 Copa América come from different clubs in Europe, the Major League Soccer will have presence in the most important event in the South American Football Confederation. A total of 13 MLs players have been called to their respective national teams.

Chile

Felipe Mora (Portland Timbers).

Ecuador

Diego Palacios (LAFC), Jhegson Méndez (Orlando City) and Xavier Aguirre (Seattle Sounders).

Peru

Alexánder Callens (NYCFC), Pedro Gallese (Orlando City), Marcos López (San Jose Earthquakes) and Raúl Ruidíaz (Seattle Sounders).

Venezuela

Josef Martínez (Atlanta United), Freddy Vargas (FC Dallas), Jhonder Cádiz (Nashville SC), Cristian Cásseres Jr. (NYRB) and José Andrés Martínez (Philadelphia Union).
