What's the maximum number of players in a country's squad?
All 24 nations have now announced their squads for the 2020 European Championship, which gets underway on 11 June.
All 24 nations involved in this summer’s European Championship have confirmed their squad for the tournament, with countries allowed to include a maximum of 26 players in their list.
Squad size increased from 23 for Euro 2020
UEFA, European football’s governing body, announced in May that it was increasing the maximum squad size from the usual 23 “to mitigate the risks of teams facing a shortage of available players due to possible positive COVID-19 tests and subsequent quarantine measures”.
However, teams will only be able to pick up to 12 substitutes for each match, meaning that three members of a country’s 26-man squad will have to be left out of that game.
Teams will be able to make a maximum of five substitutions per match.
Spain the only country not to pick 26-man squad
Twenty-three of the 24 nations at Euro 2020 have named 26 players in their squad, with Spain the only exception. La Roja head coach Luis Enrique has opted for a 24-man group.
"We think it’s important that everyone in the squad feels like they can all play and help the team,” Luis Enrique told reporters during his squad announcement last month. "During other tournaments, we’ve found that only around 18 or 19 players tend to be used."
Euro 2020: squad replacement rules
According to UEFA, countries are allowed unlimited replacements before the first match “in the event of serious injury or illness”. This includes covid-19 positive cases and players who are a close contact to a positive case.
Meanwhile, goalkeepers can be replaced throughout the tournament “in the event of physical incapacity”, and even if there are one or two other keepers available in the squad.
Players who have been replaced cannot then be added to their country’s squad for a second time, UEFA says.
