The Mayorca island tennis player Rafael Nadal has been the most successful in history on clay courts. He has a 62–8 record in clay court tournament finals and has lost only four times in best-of-five-set matches on this turf. In addition, Nadal has won 13 French Open titles (and is unbeaten in finals), 11 Monte-Carlo Masters, and 10 Rome Masters.

The Spaniard also owns the longest single-surface winning streak in the Open Era, winning 81 consecutive matches on clay from April 2005 to May 2007. Furthermore, he has never been forced to 5 sets in 13 French Open Finals wins, not even once. Moreover, Nadal never lost two consecutive matches on clay, which is why many tennis critics and top players regard him as the greatest clay-court player of all time.

A very limited number of tennis players managed to defeat Nadal on Parisian red clay since his first appearance at the Roland Garros in 2005. As a result, only two players are responsible for his three defeats in 16-year old history at the French Open.

Robin Soderling (2009)

His first defeat came in 2009 from Robin Soderling, who pulled off what remains one of the biggest upsets in tennis history. The Swede, who ascended as high as No. 4 in the ATP Rankings, handed Rafael Nadal his first loss at Roland Garros, with 2-6 7-6(2) 4-6 6-7(2) in the 4th Round, sending shockwaves through the sports world. It will be remembered that he throw at Rafa 61 winner en-route to his four-set shocker.

Novak Djokovic (2015)

Nadal's second defeat was in the quarterfinal of the French Open 2015, where he lost from Djokovic in straight sets,5-7 3-6 1-6. It was Djokovic's first victory against the Spaniard in seven meetings at the tournament. Djokovic also broke the record for most sets won against Nadal at the French Open and became the only man to beat Nadal at all four Grand Slam tournaments. That year the Serbian player also managed to win all four of their encounters in the singles, on different turfs.

Novak Djokovic (2021)

Nadal and Djokovic met in the semifinals of the French Open 2021, in a rematch of the previous year's final when the Spaniard won with ease. Nadal was 85-0 after winning the first set on the Parisian clay, until this match where he won his first and only set with 6-3, but later lost the three in succession with 3-6, 6-7, 2-6. As a result, Novak Djokovic became the first player to defeat Nadal in the Paris semifinal, earning one of the biggest wins of his career.
