Earlier this week it was reported by ESPN that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández was going to be included in Mexico’s preliminary Gold Cup roster. The Los Angeles Galaxy striker is having a breakout season in his second year in Major League Soccer and he has scored seven goals and provided one assist in seven games.

‘Chicharito’ has not spoken to Gerardo Martino

It is the preliminary list, but it is always an honor to be included in the Mexico national team. When I started my career I was in a preliminary list for a Gold Cup, but at the end I was not included in the final roster for that tournament. I mean there’s still a long way to go, I am happy and then we will see when the time comes if I make the 23-player roster,” said ‘Chicharito.’

The last time Javier Hernández played for the Mexican national team was in 2019 and since Gerardo Martino took over the managerial job that same year, the 33-year-old striker has not been called to ‘El Tri.’ Mexico’s all-time leading scorer said that he has not spoken to Martino about playing in the Gold Cup this summer.

“I feel great and this break has helped me a lot to recover. Regarding the Mexican national team like I said before, it's an honor to be taken in consideration, but it is too soon to talk about that subject and I have not spoken to Gerardo Martino about anything.”

The coach of the Mexico national team will submit a preliminary list of 60-players for the 2020 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament later this week and the final roster will be announced on 30 June. El Tri will play their first game of the group stage on 10 July with a team to be determined.
